Is it a light tank or a heavy tank disguised as a light tank? The AMX 40 might be classified as a light tank but comparing it’s armor to other tanks in it’s tier(tier 4) it becomes very clear to see that the AMX 40 is more heavy tank than it is a light tank.
The index at the bottom of each picture describes a few abbreviations used and also the format in which the armor details are described in. Effective Armor (EA) refers to the overall effectiveness of the armor without normalization.
The armor values are presented in three different scenarios for the angled view of the tank.15° frontal(75° side), 25° frontal(65° side), 35° frontal(55° side), and 45° frontal(45° side). A# refers to specific spots on the hull while T# refers to specific turret locations.Frontally the AMX 40 is a challenge for most tanks it normally faces as it’s armor is very difficult to deal with due to the amount of angles it possesses.
UFG The upper frontal glacis might only be 60mm thick but it is at an impressive 65°-70° angle which greater increases it’s effectiveness. It’s armor values are 142-175 EA / 120-142 AP which easily make the AMX 40 no joke to deal with. Keep in mind that due to the armor relying on it’s angle immensely if you can negate it in anyway this area becomes much less protected. Beak The locationb etween the UFG/LFG might seem like a great place to shoot however the very small “flat” piece is very difficult to actually hit and in most cases impossible to rely upon. This extends slightly into the UFG with it’s 70mm thick armor at 65° giving it 166 EA / 140 AP armor values. LFG The lower frontal glacis weaker than the armor located above it…but the main issue is that at close range the armor gains a ton of protection due to it’s proximity to the ground and the AMX 40’s size. At mid to long range it can be used as a weak spot however since the armor is only 70mm/15° giving it 72 EA / 71 AP. A1/A3/A3 The main weak spot on the AMX 40’s frontal hull is located in this area as it drops down to only 50mm of armor with slight angles. A1/A2 both hover around 53-57mm armor values for both EA/AP while the weakest parts are the A3 view slits. The A3 locations are only 40mm of armor and are very easy to damage. A4 The UFG section highlighted in A4 is still 60mm thick but the angle drops down to 60° and in a few small locations even under that. This gives this area 105 EA / 93 AP armor values. FT The frontal turret armor is 80mm thick with a wide array of armor values. If you can hit a flat portion of this armor it is closer to 80mm of armor while if you miss and hit a highly angled part the armor value skyrockets. It’s best to just avoid shooting here. Mantlet The mantlet on the AMX 40 contains no location with 0 armor behind it meaning that the 80mm+80mm protection covers the entire mantlet area. T1/T5 Both the T1 and T5 areas on the turret are only covered by 40mm of armor. Both are very small however limiting their usefulness. T2/T3/T4 This section of the AMX 40’s turret can be very tricky to deal with and generally should be avoided if possible. T2 is only 45mm thick but is highly angled so only shoot here if you can hit a flat piece. T3/T4 are both 80mm thick like the rest of the frontal turret armor and have many different angles. T6/T7 The small section that sticks out of the top hatch on the turret is difficult to hit at a distance but technically is weaker than the rest of the armor. T6 is only protected by 60mm of armor while T7 is protected by a mere 40mm of armor.Unlike a lot of tanks the AMX 40 still retains a lot of protection while being engaged from the side.
USH #1 This portion of the upper side hull is 65mm thick at 30° giving it 75 EA / 71 AP armor values. USH #2 Located above USH #1 is USH #2 which drops down to 45mm of armor but the angle jumps up to 45°. This gives this area armor values of 70 EA / 64 AP. LSH #1 The lower side hull becomes very nasty to deal with on the AMX 40. The hull armor is only 40mm/0° behind the spaced armor however the spaced armor is 30mm+15mm with the possibility of an additional 10mm of armor added if the tracks are hit. This gives this area 75 EA/AP with 85 EA/AP if the tracks are hit behind the spaced armor. LSH #2 Beneath LSH #1 is LSH #2 which becomes easier to damage….But little do most people realize at first is that most of this area has no hull armor behind it(highlighted in blue). The armor here in the yellow part is the 40mm of hull armor plus 15mm of spaced armor and the possibility of 10mm of track armor. A1 A1 remains from the frontal view and wraps around to the side hull. This location still is protected by just 50mm of armor at minimal angles. FT/ST/RT The turret armor remains difficult to deal with from the side since the angles vary across the turret and can cause shells to continually bounce off. The FT section has 80mm of armor while both the ST/RT sections have 60mm. T6/T7/T8 The T6 and T7 areas remain from the frontal view. T8 however becomes a viable spot to aim for if the hull is hidden as it only has 30mm of armor protecting it…simply aim at the flattest parts and you’ll easily penetrate. The rear of the AMX 40 isn’t to difficult to deal with if you stick to the central area of the hull as the armor isn’t to strong here. The turret can be very difficult to damage due to the odd angles on it so only fire if you can hit the T9 and T10 areas as they are the weakest.
