There are two common ways in which you can upgrade your character. The first would be to upgrade their outfit, which can be done by spending trophies or coins to buy new outfits for specific stat boosts. The second way would be to sacrifice old outfit items so you can make the new or newer ones better. For instance, if you want to upgrade your driver, you should be focusing on its distance above all other stats. Also bear in mind that some updates may result in a loss of stats in some areas; think first and evaluate the stat boosts and/or decreases before proceeding with a club upgrade.
In other words, grind it out. Some levels may be too hard for you to complete, usually on account of not having your clubs leveled up high enough. Player vs player mode is another way to farm for coins, gemstones, and more, so do give PvP a try if you need to upgrade your clubs and/or outfits in a pinch.
