Demigod Review

Demigod is a strategy game from Stardock and Gas Powered games and is in the genre of MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) games like League of Legends and DOTA (The Warcraft 3 mod). Demigod was released in April of 2009 so why am I reviewing it almost 3 years later? Well, it is now available on Steam for $9.99. So how does this newcomer fair up against these two giants? Only time will tell, but for now, I know my thoughts on this new one.

First off there is no storyline or single player mode. Now this is nothing new to this genre but I was hoping perhaps that they could have figured out a way to make it happen. The single player is a 5 on 5 battle with four computer allies in an attempt to complete an objective. Sometimes that means destroying the other teams citadel sometimes it could just be a first to ten deathmatch. These different types of game modes add a little bit of variety but in the end I find myself just sticking to the Citadel destruction. You can also choose to play in a tournament style format in single player as well.

Demigod offers you 8 different avatars to choose from varying in style and role. Each are fairly basic and even though the talent system in this game may keep each game from being the exact same, the lack of characters is a big minus especially in comparison to a game like League of Legends. To fans of this genre you won’t find anything new in this game that hasn’t been done better in a game you already love and that’s where Demigod falls very short. It seems slow paced and the camera view is awkward at times. I’m not sure how exactly to explain it but if you’ve played games like this before you’ll know what I’m talking about. You level up skills through a talent tree where each skill puts you further down a decided path. It was an interesting idea, but in the end, unnecessary as it only adds a bit of variety but nothing game changing.

The graphics on this game are good for the genre but the gameplay lacks while the graphics could have made this a big hit. Not enough characters and a clunky feel overall leave me wanting to double click that League of Legends icon on my desktop again. This game had some potential but seems to have been more concerned with making a game that “looked” like it was better than the competition, instead of making one that “felt” like it. As a fan to this genre I must say that this game is a huge disappointment and I can’t even recommend it to a newcomer.

If you are going to make a MOBA game you must understand that the two best ones are Free to Play and you better have something amazing and new if you are going to try to take advantage of this market. Stardock and Gas Powered must have missed the memo and this game falls very short of being even playable in comparison.
