Do you love strategy games and dragons? We’ve found the game for you. Brought to you by Pocket Gems Incorporated, War Dragons involves fast-paced invades of enemy towns and the construction and building to defend your own. Released May 5, 2015, War Dragons is only available to iOS devices as of now. War Dragons captures the essence of Clash of Clans while adding in the aspect of an RPG game during battle. War Dragons is an online game that calls together people into an alliance in order to help each other in the battle to conquer towns. Rated 4.5/5, War Dragons is an addictive game that entices you to create stronger dragons and a stronger base. The visual effects surpass any other game of its kind and the details on the artwork are touched up to perfection.
The goal of this game is seemingly simple. Try to conquer other people while not getting conquered yourself. During a defense, if you’re online, you can defend yourself with abilities like healing or shields. While on the attack, you use dragons as if you are the dragon and attempt to destroy the other town with as many dragons as you have. Conquering accomplishes goals and grants you score and defending yourself from getting conquered does the same and prevents you from losing score. So the overall goal is to have as many points as possible so that you can climb up the leaderboard to eventually become number one!
Sign up regularly with Game Center or with Facebook. With Facebook, you can find friends and attempt to ask them to play along with you. Adding people is a must in this game. Finding a clan to help you with your attack is a must if you wish to compete in the “big leagues”. With a clan, your allies can send help to you if you’re under attack.
Players start building their kingdom and defending it from invaders by collecting over 70 different types of dragons. Dragons contain a unique set of abilities and skills with different groupings. Dragons can come in types of hunters, warriors, and sorcerers. Players must strategize their army using all the different types of dragons in order to defeat the enemy.
Dragons can be bred and trained in order to gain more stats and become stronger over time. Players in War Dragons must divvy up their resources to both maintain a strong kingdom as well as train their dragons for attack. These resources include food and wood in order to maintain a town. How do players get these dragons? They must complete quests to earn Egg Tokens, which can be turned in for new dragon eggs which must be incubated over time in order to hatch.
Invading takes on more of a first person shooter type game where the players’ dragons fly automatically and leave the player to tap and swipe across to screen in order to attack major structures. Every dragon in this game has a primary attack as well as a secondary ability that includes explosive shields, chain lightning, and more. Explosive shields allow the player to have a shield for their dragon to protect its health and also an ability to detonate the shield to do massive damage to structures. Chain Lightning is used to simply explode buildings using lightning.
War Dragons also includes a multiplayer aspect to its already various characteristics. Gamers can chat with others in real time, join guilds with friends, and support both player vs player and team based multiplayer functionality.
Creating a kingdom involves strong strategically strategy in the placement of archer towers, lightning towers and ballistae. Each match, either offense or defense, can last up to 15 minutes. Kingdoms can take on up to six islands to expand the base.
Guilds take on a whole new role in this game. Guilds can contain up to 50 players and up to three guild members can attack a single enemy base at a single time. Coordination with a guild can overwhelm many kingdoms looking to fend off attacks. If you are attacked, your guild members can help you defend as well as yourself.
War Dragons’ producers are proud to call their game a non pay-to-win game. The only benefits you get for paying extra cash is to quicken the speed of construction. War Dragons also runs on the Mantis Engine. This allows for 3-D graphics with a small memory footprint, specialized for mobile devices. This also allows people with bad connection to the Internet, which often happens on mobile devices, to work more efficiently with bad internet.

Use as few dragons as possible. Fewer dragons means more rewards. After every battle, your dragons receive experience based on the number of dragons you use in battle. The more bonus flames you get at the end of the attack, the more experience you get. Using only 1 dragon will nets you two bonus flames, using 2 dragons nets you 1 bonus flame, and using 3 or more will grant no bonus flames. Try to stick to one dragon unless you’re in danger of dying.
Ash, a quest giver, will provide missions that you can complete which give you a massive experience boost and give you several level ups after completing some of them. Getting Ash’s missions done is the best way to make progress in this game.
On the opposite end of Ash, Dragon Guard missions are battle-related missions. They give tasks based on using a specific dragon or dealing out a certain amount of damage. These missions are the only way to receive egg tokens that was explained before. Wait about 10 minutes between each mission to keep on doing missions. Stockpile egg tokens to eventually collect all 70!
If you’re not playing War Dragons, War Dragons will automatically take control of your towers to defend against an attack. However, if you leave your game on, you’ll be notified and have full capabilities to defend yourself against the attacker in real time.
Using the right dragon is literally half the battle. Knowing which dragons do what is also extremely important.
Hunter dragons have a rapid tap fireball attack. These dragons do a large amount of burst damage on a single target. Their utility abilities include Cloak and Evasion which help them dodge some of the incoming fire. Use them to take out the towers of the base.
Warrior dragons are your tanks. They have high health and support abilities such as Rejuvenate, Cure Poison, and Explosive Shield. Their attack is rather slow and has little damage, but they do some work over a wide area. Use these dragons to help soften up the enemy base and let your other dragons do the rest of the work.
Sorcerer Dragons have a lock-on attack that hits up to the three different targets. Their abilities allow you to nuke a large area with a large amount of damage, but require a lot of resources in order to do so. Use these against Tower-heavy towns.
Know the towers that you’re facing. The Cannon Tower’s break all shields. This means that the Warrior-type dragon gets dealt a lot of damage and loses its Explosive shield in the process.
Placing your farms in areas near your towers allow your towers to heal up from the farms. Let your towers do one or more shots by putting farms next to them to heal them in battle.
Breed as many dragons as possible.
The graphics in War Dragons are extremely well done. The first player attacking was also an interesting touch on the part of uniqueness. This game allows for different strategically strategy in building a defense and also a mechanical type play while on the attack and defense. This game does require a large time commitment to get good as well as a bit of luck. First of all, this large time commitment comes from protecting yourself from others. Being on during an invade is of the utmost importance because one small error could be the difference between getting conquered and not. Being on against an invader is a large advantage, so time must spent making sure that you aren’t attacked and are on when the time comes.
Secondly, the bit of luck comes from getting into a good alliance to help you out. If you aren’t on at the time, people in an alliance can help you out by defending you. This also works the other way where you can get other people to help you out and attack a person. This ultimately gives you a large advantage where it’s 3vs1 vs a 1vs1 or possibly a 1vs3. So finding a good active group who can help you out is a bit of luck.
Another downfall of War Dragons is when you have to wait on the construction time on a tower and building. The construction times get very long the more levels you have on a building. Also, a large amount of time might be spent on waiting for resources from your farms. Both could lead people to get bored of War Dragons from lack of progress. Of course, it’s understandable that one person who started earlier should have the advantage over someone who just started, so I don’t think it’s the fault of the producer of War Dragons.
Advertisements are relatively frequent, but not to the point where you don’t want to play War Dragons anymore due to advertisements. The companies of War Dragons don’t feel the need to overload users with ads in order to get revenue.
A common complain that I see with War Dragons, although not that common, is that when an update comes around, the game crashes like crazy for some users. The app-producers should make sure that their updates are solid and don’t have that problem even though for a lot of apps, that is a problem. Game crashes could easily lead someone away from War Dragons.
Artwork: 10/10 The detail on the dragons is really well done to the point where you could tell the difference between the dragons based on small details that each dragon has. The buildings are made 3-D like for a bonus and the fire that comes out of the dragons is as satisfying as any other popular game.
Music & SFX: 7/10 The music isn’t anything unusual but it does add a nice aspect to the game, especially when the dragon is attacking towers with flames. The flames give off a nice hissing sound which creates a sensation as if you’re pretty much there.
Story & Originality: 9/10 There is no real storyline to War Dragons. There is no story mode to follow, just attacking other people and trying to get to the top. The originality is what gives it the rating. The first-person attacking using dragons is something that I have not seen before with any other games and gave off a fresh feeling when I saw it.
General Gameplay: 9/10 Really nice gameplay with the real time defending and real time attacking. You can actually participate in the battle instead of standing on the sidelines waiting for the end to come. The game is really ahead in terms of what it’s able to accomplish online.
Addictiveness: War Dragons is extremely addictive because you feel the urge to attack and constantly check whether you’re under attack or not. I could see kids staying up all night because they didn’t want to get attacked while they were sleeping. Other than that, I could see how the construction to build the best town or getting all 70 dragons as adding to the addictiveness of War Dragons
Overall Rating: I give War Dragons overall, a 9/10.
