Batman Arkham Origins is a game published on the Google Play Store and Apple iTunes by Warner Bros International Enterprises on September 19, 2014. With over 5 million downloads and a rating of 4.2 aggregated from over 460,000 reviews, it’s clear that Batman Arkham Origins is a game that is hugely popular and well received. Is the game worthy of its large amount of downloads and rave reviews? In this article I look at the positive and negative aspects of Batman Arkham Origins while providing you with Tips, Tricks, and Cheats to make your time playing the game as easy and enjoyable as possible.
Batman Arkham Origins is based on the console game sharing the same title. Batman Arkham Origins was released in 2013 for Windows, Playstation 3, Wii U, and Xbox 360 and is the third title in the Batman: Arkham series. The game released on the Google Play Store is a mobile adaptation based on the console game, but players should not expect it to be an exact experience. While Batman Arkham Origins takes some plot points from its console namesake, Batman Arkham Origins for Android is a fighting game, while the original game for consoles and PC was an action adventure roleplaying game.
Upon opening the game, the player is directed to play through a few short tutorials that lay out the basics of combat and then Batman is free to go into the city and stop crime.
The basic premise of Batman Arkham Origins is that there are 13 assassins on the loose and terrorizing the city, and Batman needs to fight each assassin’s cronies before reaching a final boss fight where he faces off against one of the assassins.
Batman Arkham Origins is a fighting game adapted to be playable using mobile controls. The controls are simple and pretty easy to pick up. The player taps on Batman’s enemy to do damage. One click is a basic attack while three attacks chained together triggers a combo. Upon triggering a combo, the player is instructed to quickly swipe in certain directions to extend the combo and do more damage.
There are two stances in Batman Arkham Origins – Assault and Guard. Assault stance increases attack while Guard stance boosts Batman’s defense. In addition to prioritizing different stats, the stances allow use of special abilities exclusive to that stance. These abilities will be discussed in detail further down in the review.
Regardless of whether you’re in Assault or Guard stance, clicking the button at the bottom left will cause Batman to block attacks. This doesn’t completely mitigate the attack, but it definitely removes a good chunk of the damage.
Early on in the game, enemies will start to use powerful attacks indicated by an orange aura surrounding them. Blocking is essential here because if you don’t block you will take a lot of damage and risk suffering long-term status effects. It’s also possible that Batman will be stunned, an annoying effect that renders Batman completely defenseless until the player taps a circle enough times to break him out.
Though the combat in general is pretty easy to pick up, there are nuances added to the game through the use of skills and different Batsuits.
As mentioned above there are two stances that you can cycle between during battle in Batman Arkham Origins – Assault and Guard. Both stances have special abilities that are exclusive to that stance. This adds some fun strategy as you hop between stances to do damage to your opponent and keep Batman fighting fit.
Assault stance, as the name suggests, boasts skills that help Batman deal damage more efficiently.
Guard stance is comprised of skills that reduce the damage Batman takes during combat or restore lost health.
In addition to the Assault and Guard skills, there’s a third tree named simply “skills” which contains mostly passive boosts that will be in effect regardless of what stance Batman is currently in.
Though effective use of skills increase Batman’s aptitude in combat considerably, unlocking and/or upgrading Batsuits is where the majority of Batman’s statistic increases will come from in Batman Arkham Origins.
As you complete the tutorial, you’re furnished with enough cash to buy the first of many Batsuits. This initial Batsuit is balanced between attack and defense and doesn’t offer any exceptional bonuses.
Additional Batsuits beyond the first one are unlocked via the basic in-game currencydepicted as a white circle with two arrows, or the premium wayne-tech currency which is attainable by spending real money.
Each Batsuit offers a certain value in Health, Damage, Block, Speed, and Damage Reduction. These statistics are all self-explanatory and function as you would expect them to.
Players also receive experience when they complete fights, and upon gaining enough experience they reach the next level which comes with a flat boost to health and damage.
Though it’s often the case that a new Batsuit will offer significant stat boosts over Batman’s previous suit, the Batsuits, when unlocked, are at their most basic form and require upgrades to reach their full potential.
Upgrades are acquired by finding various pieces of a Batsuit during gameplay and combining them to increase a Batsuit’s power.
Though I’ve discussed how combat works above, it’s worth mentioning the way you progress through the game. The city that Batman deigns to save is split into four sections – Uptown Gotham, The Docks, Downtown Gotham, and the Industrial District. Each area has a Boss battle that is unlocked by engaging in combat with the villain’s cronies in missions spread across the map. Each mission, when highlighted, details the difficulty level, the reward, and the stamina cost required to undertake it.
Like many mobile games recently Batman Arkham Origins uses a stamina system to limit the amount of content players can access in a given sitting without paying money. Batman has several stamina charges, and these are refreshed with premium currency or by waiting the requisite amount of time for stamina to recharge.
Some missions vary slightly in difficulty and the different abilities enemies have access to, but the basic format is always the same: defeat your opponent in a basic fighting game format by using the skills and stances available to you. As can be expected, higher difficulty fights will require more advanced Batsuits and more points invested into the Assault Guard and Skills tree.
Batman Arkham Origins can get difficult pretty quickly, which is why you will need a lot of upgrade points and Wayne-Tech Points. While you can get both of these items in the app store, it can get costly pretty quickly. Due to the popularity of Batman Arkham Origins, we have decided to add a hack tool to our database, which means you can get the upgrade points and Wayne-Tech Points for free.
If you look at the image below, you will be able to see how easy our hack tool is to use. All you need to do is enter the amounts of upgrade points and Wayne-Tech Points that you want to add to your account.
First, download our free Batman Arkham Origins hack tool right here from the website, and you will notice it takes around 30 seconds to download. After that, it should take about 30 seconds for the hack tool to automatically install. Once it has installed, select either iOS or Android and then enter the amounts of upgrade points and Wayne-Tech Points that you want to add.
Press on “Start” to begin the hack tool when you are ready, and this process should take about 30 seconds as well. Once that has finished, open up Batman Arkham Origins on your device, and you will notice that the items have already been added to your account.
While there aren’t any cheats in Batman Arkham Origins per se, there are some combat tips I can offer that will make your gameplay experience much more enjoyable.
The first thing I would mention is to try to pull off as many combos as you can. At first it can be tough to catch all the correct swipes, but pulling off a successful combo does a large amount of damage and will knock your opponent back slightly to give you more breathing room.
If you see an enemy start to glow orange and charge an attack, that’s a cue to block as quickly as possible. These super powered attacks will do a lot of damage to Batman and either stun him or do something else nasty such as adding a negative status condition.
In terms of noncombat tips, I’d recommend inviting your friends to play the game. Integrating Batman Arkham Origins with Facebook allows you to receive free Wayne-Tech coins when a friend starts playing.
Also, by signing up for a Warner Bros ID, you’re able to unlock a Batsuit that isn’t obtainable any other way. This can give you a quick boost in the early game so you can start progressing through the story pretty easily.
I feel that Batman Arkham Origins did a decent job of bringing the Arkham series to mobile, but there are a lot of things that could have been better about the game. I’ll start off the review by saying that the music and graphics of this game are top-notch. You can tell that they packed as much high-quality art and sound as possible into this monstrous 1 gigabyte download.
However, as someone who has played Arkham games on the PC and console, I feel like the mobile port of Arkham origins was the weakest entry so far. Fighting is a major part of the Arkham series, so I guess it made sense to make the mobile game a fighter rather than an action rpg, but a lot of the storytelling is lost in this format. Sure there are cut scenes and a decent plot to follow, but the console version of this game offered a much richer experience that was lacking in Batman Arkham Origins for Android.
Another issue I have with the game is it didn’t do a great job representing the fighter genre. So much of the complexity of fights comes from moving your character back and forth and combining different joystick movements with button presses to unleash powerful combos on your enemies. While Batman Arkham Origins had integrated combos, they required no skill and were quite boring to execute. The different skills available from upgrading the Assault, Guard, and Skill trees added a little bit of interest but it couldn’t hide the fact that the game is extremely watered down for a Fighter.
Batman Arkham Origins is also a little bit behind on the current trends with premium currency. The majority of games that I’ve played on mobile in the past few months include premium currency but also offer a way to obtain said currency for free, should the player be willing to put in time. The fact that premium currency is generally expensive is somehow redeemed in my eyes when games give you the option to watch a few advertisements for some currency to spend. With this method, the developer still gets paid and players who don’t want to spend real money are still able to fully enjoy the experience.
Speaking of monetization, one minor but noticeable gripe I have with Batman Arkham Origins is that it tended to show ads frequently. This normally wouldn’t have bothered me, as ads are to be expected in a free gaming experience, but the X the player has to click is so small and so sensitive that at least a dozen times I ended up removing myself from the game and opening the Google Play Store. This was frustrating enough for me to take an extended break from the game as it seemed to happen super frequently.
Overall, I think Batman Arkham Origins is a decent game but nothing to write home about. Even removing the expectations for this game to stand up to the precedent set by the console games in the series, Batman Arkham Origins remains a weak fighter that doesn’t deliver an engaging experience despite the novel innovations it added in for combat.
Artwork: Batman Arkham Origins has some of the best graphics and art I’ve seen in any mobile game. Absolutely a 10/10. Rating: 10/10
Music / Sound Effects: The music is orchestral and beautiful with a high production value. The mood of the soundtrack pieces really fit the darker tone of the game. Rating: 10/10
Story / Originality: The story is decent but remains a watered down version of its console predecessors. There’s some originality added with the stances in combat and the quirks upgrades provide, but it’s not enough to redeem what is essentially a mediocre fighter riding on the name recognition of Batman. Rating: 3/10
General Gameplay: The gameplay is decently enjoyable but becomes boring pretty quickly. As someone who has played really fleshed out fighting games in the past, it’s hard to really enjoy the game as it falls so far off the mark. Rating: 5/10
Addictiveness: The game isn’t very addictive at all. Batman Arkham Origins basically forces you to stop playing after a certain point due to the stamina system, and when that happened to me, I never turned it back on again. Rating: 2/10
Overall Rating: Batman Arkham Origins is a testament to what can be done on the mobile platform as far as graphics and music goes, but fails to deliver in them most important part of any game – enjoyable gameplay that will keep players coming back for more. Rating: 5/10
