Whenever I encounter an endless game the very thought that crosses my mind is “why another one? When whole mobile market is drowning under them, then why make another addition?” I don’t know what developers think when they are trying bring something into existence, which already is by hundreds of other developers, with just a slight modification which most of the time isn’t even worthy of being called a modification!! Or is it that they want to make sure that they have a game for every category?
Today we’ll take a look at RunBot, another endless running game developed by Genera. It is available for both iOS and Android devices. RunBot claims itself to be ‘The Ultimate Running Game’ but it’s not the first time we have seen mighty words similar to these and there are extremely rare chances that running games proves what they claim to be because most of them hardly provide something which isn’t convection. The only game that has justified its existence after the trio of Temple Run, Subway Surfers and Jetpack Joyride is Lara Croft: Relic Run and by-far is the best among the endless running titles. So let’s see that RunBot takes a seat at the bottom of the sea or floats with best ones.
The expectations which I had weren’t high, all I expected was a customized Iron Man running like a madman but 4/5 stars users rating across all platforms meant something and I found the game surpassing my expectations. This game is about a high-tech advanced robotic weapon system called RunBot; that went against its own design protocols and choose a path of righteousness instead of being a killing machine. RunBot escapes from his firm but now he’s been chased by drones and slowed down by obstacles of a futuristic city. Your job is to guide RunBot so that he can save himself.
The game will start off with a tutorial guiding you about the controls. There are three sections related to controls namely dodging obstacles, destroying drones and Laser towers, and flying through tunnels. The obstacles that you face will consist of simple still blockades, moving blockages, standby lasers, even containers, landmines and loads more. The controls to avoid these are simple, if you Swipe up RunBot will perform a Parkour-Style Jump or climb up a container, swiping down will lead to slide and swipe across two remaining sides to change your lane as it contains three lanes just like in Subway Surfers. If you face a standby laser which cannot be avoid by moving then you can use shield. To activate shield press on shield icon from right bottom and then just walk through lasers. Shield can also be used to pass through mines safely. Shield is available for a limited time and you have to wait few seconds before it can be used again. Drones and laser towers will attack you using their lasers and to counter them, RunBot is equipped with laser blaster. To attack any drone or laser tower just tap on it and RunBot will blast it into pieces. The third sections uses gyro controls to move RunBot in the air to avoid any in-tunnel obstacles.
RunBot might look simple but it isn’t. RunBot features two difficulty modes namely Casual and hardcore. I wouldn’t recommend going for hardcore because causal doesn’t remain casual after few minutes of gameplay. RunBot also has limited running battery, there is a battery bar that you have to watch out for. To recharge it you can pick battery packs off the track. Green and purple are the two different types that you’ll find. Green gives a small recharge while Purple gives a better boost. Running isn’t the only thing which causes depletion in battery, but colliding with minor obstacles and attacks from drones’ causes it too, although there is a Reactive Armour to protect you against minor obstacles but it requires hours to recharge. Other than battery there is a rank/level system too. You have to raise your rank to unlock upgrades. To raise your rank experience points are required. The experience points that you’ll get after the race depends upon your performance which includes both the score and collected Battery Cells.
Lengthier gameplay means more score and there is also a multiplier which can increase the score that you gain by a factor. To increase the multiplier you can pick those red round boxes. You will also find shiny green pieces which are called super cores, these are used to revive RunBot from death and for customization. The number of Super Cores required for revival starts at one for first revival and increases to two for second again so-on but luckily it will reset to one again for next try. Missions are also present in this game and can be check from pause menu. These missions includes the likes of scoring three thousand in a single run and/or slide under five obstacles in a single run etc. All the time there will be three missions available and once you complete any of them, it will be replaced by a new one. Missions will give Energy Cells and Super Cores as rewards. If you’re thinking that’s all then you are mistaken because this game also feature the regular upgrade items like Jetpacks, magnet but you’ll have to unlock them first.
The two currencies of this game are Battery Cells and Super cores. Both of them are equally important and the methods to obtain them are same too. Battery Cells are required to upgrade RunBot and unlock remaining upgradables, while Super Cores are required to customize RunBot. As previously mentioned, the first method to obtain these currencies is via clearing missions. You will gain Battery Cells in acceptable amount but Super Cores won’t be much. The second method is to use in-app purchases from shop to get them. From the shop you can get one thousand Battery Cells for $.99, ten thousand Battery Cells for $3.99, fifty thousand Battery Cells will cost you $9.99 and for $19.99 you can get two hundred thousand Battery Cells while five Super Cores will set you back by $.99, fifty Super Cores costs $3.99, two hundred-fifty Super Cores are for $9.99 and one thousand are for $19.99, and any kind of purchase will remove ads.
RunBot offers character customization as well as upgrades. In customization you can change Armor or apply decals to your current Armor. I’ve to admit here that the New Armors are pretty cool and does gives a touch of Iron Man’s inventory. Every armor has a special ability i.e. extra speed or absorbing more damage. Unfortunately, new armors are rank locked, you cannot purchase them straight away. There are total of six armors, first one unlocks at rank ten and costs three hundred seventy-five Super Cores, and last one unlocks at rank twenty and is for fifteen hundred Super Cores.
There are four different tabs in upgrades section, which are Energy, Defense, Systems and Hacks. Except Hacks, everything has five levels and are rank locked. In Energy tab you have Power Cores which reduces energy consumption, Battery Cells which increases the maximum energy of RunBot, Energy Converter increases the energy you get after collecting cells, Overdrive gives backup power when you run out of energy and last one is Kinetic Generator which increases the probability of finding battery cells.
In Defense tab you have Armor Plates which reduces the damage received from collisions, Shield Generator which decreases the cooldown time of shield and Shield Capacitor which increases the shield’s active time. In the Systems tab you’ll find five unlockables and these are the same old that you’ll find in rest of the runners. First one is Jetpack which will let you fly over obstacles for a limited time and this time can be increased via upgrades, then it’s is Magnetic Field which attracts Battery Cells towards RunBot and again is for limited time which can be extended through updates, after that there is Power Laser which increases the damage done by RunBot’s laser, second last is Nano Machines which reduces the number of Super Cores required for revival and last is Radar which increases the probability of finding special items.
The last tab is of Hacks and these can only be bought using real money (in-app purchase). All items in this tab just has a single level. First hack is Double Battery Cells which increases the worth of each Battery and is for $0.99, second one is Double Experience which doubles the experience points required to raise your rank and costs again $0.99, and last hack costs $3.99 and will take you to hundredth rank straight away.
This review is based upon 2.2.2.0 version of RunBot which requires minimum Android 4.0.3 (Ice-cream Sandwich) on Android devices and iOS 5.1.1 is required for iOS based devices. Graphics and artwork of this game is somewhat intensive and will not work properly on low end devices, hence a midrange device is minimal for lag-free experience. This game isn’t compatible with Google Play Games, which also means no achievements, hence it isn’t for those who are looking for level up. RunBot can be synced with your Facebook which too doesn’t features data saving but can be used to compare scores with friends.
The endless runner game RunBot is really addictive, but battery cells and super cores are needed in this game to help you get through it successfully. You can get the super cores and battery cells through the app store, but you need to spend real money in order to get these items, and this gets really expensive. If you would like to get the battery cells and super cores for free, then you need to download our free RunBot hack tool.
The image below shows you how the RunBot hack tool works. Just enter the amounts of super cores and battery cells that you would like to see in your gaming account.
First, download the RunBot hack tool, which is available right here on the website, and it takes about 30 seconds. The hack tool will automatically install on your device, and that should take about 20 seconds. After that, choose either Android or iOS depending on the device you are using, and that is when you can add the battery cells and super cores you would like to see in your account by using the options menu.
Lastly, tap “Start” to begin the RunBot hack tool, which takes less than 30 seconds to finish. When that is done, you can open up the app on your device, and you will see the items have already been placed in your account. Using our free hack tool allows you to have more fun with the game since you will be able to focus on the running and levels instead of focusing on trying to get the items through the app store.
If you’re looking to raise your Rank then play the game in hardcore mode because the rank increase vigorously in that mode.
If you just want to gather Battery Cells then keep stick to causal mode as the difficulty level doesn’t affects the occurrence of Battery Cells and other collectable material.
You primary focus should be on upgrading Battery Cells and magnet, because these will allow you to gain new Battery Cells faster.
I’ll be lying if I say that I’m not impressed as it did surpass my expectations in few departments even if it’s by a slight margin. Initially, the only major difference that I noticed between rest of the runners and this one was of viewing angle, and to be factual I didn’t like it in start but now I’m just neutral about it. Different view angle gives a new feeling but it also makes it difficult to recognize the proper row to collect items. The control were easy, responsive and, except the gyro part, similar to rest of runners. You will get used to controls but it will take more than just few tries because game will not give you enough time to settle down as the difficulty level of game will increases steeply, whenever you’ll pass your previous best mark something new and dangerous will always be waiting for you ahead.
The artwork looked attractive in images from Google Play Games and found the game to be equally good and it is more than enough for a runner. The Suits are incredibly designed and it might be the most attracting part of game especially the lighting effects of armor. The world, mainly the color scheme they choose, resembles too much to Mirror’s edge. A nice touch they have included is changing weather conditions, there will be day, night, raining and thunderstorms too. Although menu’s UI is simple but the UI during gameplay is complex. They should’ve included a guide for it.
The sound department is mixtures of good and bad. The emergency siren, when RunBot breaks through his firm, feels extremely repetitive and results in headache. Other than that background music is energetic which might not give headache but is a bit harsh. I would’ve loved robotic running sound rather than normal human’s which it features.
Overall RunBot is just good, it’s not the best in class and hardly features anything new. They just took old formula and gave it a new look, which is impressive, but this look isn’t enough make this game the center of attraction. The gameplay has all the elements required but still feels incomplete maybe because elements are similar to other runners? The other major issue with this game is that it constantly push users towards in-app purchases because the currencies, especially Super Cores, which users get during gameplay are never sufficient for customization or upgrades. People will like RunBot for time being but they wouldn’t keep it in their devices for long time.
Artwork: RunBot gets a deserving 8.5/10 for the stunning visuals. This sections is the major strength of this game. The graphics are amazing, they took care of RunBot’s every tiny details. Transitions and animations are smooth, although I would’ve liked more detail of world but still should suffice.
Music & SFX: I’ll give this game a 6.5/10 here. RunBot fails to leave a decent footprint here. There’s nothing special or intriguing about RunBot in this department. The music they choose is a bit harsh that isn’t good for games which are aimed to be played for long hours. Harshness might be acceptable but the repetition cannot be which starts right from the beginning.
Story and Originality: I’ll give RunBot a 6.5/10 here. This is common hole where almost every running game falls. Background story is short, unimpressive and is absurd too. How can a Robot can possess the ability to think beyond its designed level? Feels like developers just gave a background story to fill up the empty space.
General Gameplay: RunBot gets a 7/10 here. Although this game has all the right ingredients but only if the recipe was better this game would have made a mark. There is a combat mode, different obstacles, flying through tunnels and Jetpack using gyro sensors hence everything that a user wants from an endless runner but the point is that it’s still the same, developers were supposed to introduce something new.
Addictiveness: I’ll give this game a 6.5/10 here. Users will be attracted initially because of the amazing Armors it offers but all their excitement will be perished once they’ll come across the difficulty to obtain them without paying. As previously mentioned, users requires something different to move themselves from other games and this game lacks there.
Overall I will give RunBot a moderate 7/10.
