Clash Royale

Clash Royale came out two weeks ago and I have been playing non-stop everyday to maximise my chest timers. If you haven’t heard of the game, I assume you have been living under a rock these past two weeks. Check out my glowing review of the game here. The game is free to play and believe me when I tell you that it is definitely worth your while whether you are a casual gamer or a hardcore tactician.

At one point, I got stuck at around 1000 trophies and couldn’t get to the next arena. Most of you will undoubtedly face the same problem at one point or another in your pursuit to the next level. So I hope this guide will help you achieve greatness and break down the wall you’ve been hitting.

Unit Variety

It is very important in the later stages of the game to make sure you have a good variety of ground, ranged and flying units in your deck to counter whatever the opponent is dishing out. Not only that, different units also target different things and differ in their abilities. For example, you need to have at least one unit that deals area damage to counter a horde of enemies.

Unit Costs

Unit variety also extends to the different energy/elixir costs of each unit. Keep an eye on your average elixir cost while building your deck to make sure you’re not too heavy on all the big guys. Having a deck full of big guys may look cool but you won’t be able to pull emergency units out of the bag when the enemy launches a horde attack on your tower!

A Good Defence Leads to a Good Counterattack

Are you the type that throws everything out in front whenever you can? Believe me, I was like that too in the beginning. However, you will soon realize that it might be better to wait for the opponent to attack, defend, and then launch a counter-attack from the same lane combined with any leftover troops that were defending.

Don’t throw the kitchen sink

You might be tempted to deploy all your units around the same time to overwhelm the opponent, but be aware that that will drain up all your elixir/energy that leaves you vulnerable to attacks. Deploying all the units around each other is also a bad idea since it will be susceptible to area attacks. Some players like to start from far back so that they can build up their energy and deploy a massive attack. I say give it a try to see if you like that strategy and if it works well for you.

Forget the Main Tower

You want to win right? Remember that winning is not only determined by destroying the main tower, but also by destroying more towers than the opponent at the end of 3 minutes. I’m sure you have come across a situation where you have destroyed one tower and you keep trying to attack the main tower only to be very heavily guarded? At the end of the two/three minutes, it might be wise to forget the main tower and go straight for the other tower. It has lower health, closer proximity and should be less guarded. There is no shame in winning like that. Winning is winning.

Practice! Practice! Practice!

The most important advice I can give you if you’re stuck is to play tons of training matches with different cards and decks and strategies. The AI in the training match is surprisingly good and will give you a proper challenge to test out different tactics. At later stages of the game, this is extremely important because you will find more and more opponents that will just destroy your towers and leave you feeling like a newbie being spanked. At one point, I found out in a training match that by just switching one unit for another, my entire game came together so well that I went on a winning streak.

The more you practice, the more familiar you get with the different units and how best to deal with each one. Pretty soon, you will instinctively know which card to play when the enemy plays his.
