Crossy Road

Crossy Road has become an Android phenomenon in the first couple of months after it launched on the Google Play Store. It’s challenging rouge-like elements illicit the same adrenaline and dopamine response as playing Flappy Bird (you might not remember that game because the creator made so much money he got depressed and pressured and took the game down until he managed to calm himself).

Now, Android gamers have another endless rouge-like to tap away on their free time, while banging their head against the wall whenever they get stuck at one point. If you have been wondering how your friend got his high score, or stared amazed at the global leaderboards, or kicked a stool out of frustration when your animal character was splattered under a bus on the freeway, then maybe you might find some useful tips and tricks here that will give you a lightbulb moment.

Look both ways before you cross the street

This advice might sound familiar to you if you have ever walked with your mother to the grocery store when you were young. Ironically, it also applies in this very game! It might sound obvious to you, but believe you me when I say that there were plenty of times when I looked right and began crossing and BAM, hit from the left. Also, keep your eyes not only on the next lane on the road, but further ahead. Most of the time, you will not have the luxury to stop and assess the situation while crossing any road bigger than 4 lanes.

Settle back easy Jim

More often than not, you will find yourself in the middle of the road unable to move to the next lane because of really heavy traffic, and a bus is coming your way. Instead of a “deer-in-the-headlight” moment leading to your tragic death, don’t forget that you can go backwards too! People I have talked to seem to always forget that fact because of the nature of this game. You want to go forward so badly and habitually that you just never thought to move back to avoid that incoming car. The next time you find yourself stuck and a 4WD is heading your direction, take a step back literally and reassess the situation.

Not a side-scroller, but you can!

In the same vein as moving backwards, it apparently also doesn’t seem intuitive to most players to move to the side to run away from cars. Granted you do move slower than vehicles, but that extra step to the left or right may just allow you to step forward after a slow car passes by. Then you wipe your sweat, say “omg that was intense” and praise the maker of this game for his genius invention.

Riverside trouble

You may have noticed that there is an invisible line on either side of the river that will cause you to drop off and die? It is more obvious when you are standing on a moving log heading towards the end of the river. So logically, try to jump onto logs in the middle of the river. This should give you more time to jump to the next logs as you make your way across. As my previous advice mentioned, don’t be afraid to move sideways to the middle of the river.

Greed is not recommended

My last advice may sound obvious, but I find myself guilty of this too many times as well. Too many times have I tried to get a coin on the opposite side of the road only to be squished. Believe me, the guilt and regret is just not worth it. Not when you consider that they actually give out a generous amount of coins just for playing the game, and watching videos. Sigh.

There you go! Hopefully this guide will help you break your previous high score and move up the leaderboards! Even though this game encourages you to purchase cute animals with real money, that really isn’t necessary unless you really really really fancy a particular one. Otherwise, just play a while, watch videos and you should be able to earn a lot of the characters without spending a dime.

Don’t give up, keep tapping!
