Gears of War is a linear game and it's hard to get stuck or lose yourself. If you don't know where to go, just look around and you'll surely find a way through. During a fight, you should always use some cover. Stay low and don't get in the line of fire. In this guide, you'll hardly ever find any information about ammo - there's a lot of it in the game, and you shouldn't worry over running out of bullets. It doesn't mean, however, you have to waste it and shoot at ceilings.
There are monsters which cannot be harmed using normal weapons. I.e. a Seeder needs the usage of Hammer of Dawn - a special weapon attacking the victim with a laser ray shooting from the sky. Try not waste your ammo on Wretches and their mutated kind - Dark Wretches. You can kill them with a short burst from any automatic weapon (f.e. Lancer). Wretches can be very dangerous in close combat, but they are also very weak and die easily after a few shots. Fights in Gears of War are mostly positional, so Sniper Gun comes in handy rather often. If you find one, try to use it as long as you have the ammo.
A Prison isn't the best place for a professional soldier like Marcus Fenix. Luckily, Dom appears to get him out of this dump. One question, though - for what price?
When you're asked the first question, choose "training". In the big hall take 1.Tag from the floor. Move to the 2nd floor and push the button on the desk. Past the door shoot those two red buttons on the wall to go through.
Go straight ahead and open the door. You will approach a bridge. Hide behind the left side of the door and shoot the Drone when he sticks his head out. The rule is to run forward after pushing the button and dive into the entrance (forward +A).
You'll find yourself in a big hall. Go down and take grenades. Kill two Drones hiding themselves behind pillars on the right side of the room. Find a good place behind one of the barriers and prepare a grenade. Throw it immediately after your enemies enter. Take the 2.Tag from the back of the room (behind the table, on the right). Go outside.
You're one step away from freedom. Firstly, go left to take 3.Tag. The best strategy here is to take those Drones from the left flank and then shoot them one after another. Congratulations - you've just broken out of the prison.
Run upstairs, and after that go into the corridor. You'll be attacked by a few Drones. Hide yourself behind the first barrier and shoot. They shouldn't make any problems. After the fight, your teammates will show you a place on the ground, where 4.Tag lies.
Take all the ammo and grenades and go upstairs. After a while you'll be attacked by monsters. You have two choices here. You can simply shoot at them and kill them all or you can run forward and throw a grenade in the hole (to close it).
Later you'll be attacked by the next group of Locusts (what a surprise, heh?). There isn't much to do here - your team will do most of the work for you. After that, follow them, pass the bridge and enter the building.
Just after that a hole appears and with it Locusts of course. It's easy to close it - get there (using the left side of the room) and throw a grenade in. After taking a few steps another hole opens. Run forward and use a grenade, then step back. Find a good hiding place and shoot your enemies to your heart's content... or till they're dead. Before you leave this building, take 5.Tag off the grass. Now go towards that corpse you've seen while on the bridge.
After a while, you'll be attacked by Locusts. The problem is rather obvious - one of them is shooting at you using Troika Gun. You'll have to flank it on the right and annihilate him. You won't encounter any enemies under the bridge except for few Drones, who should be easy to kill. You just need to be close enough.
Get into the empty fountain and take a position. Tremors and all-around shaking means a hole is opening somewhere close. You'll have to fight some Locusts one after another, but leaving the fountain isn't the best idea. Annihilate your enemies patiently and holes will close by themselves. After the fight is over, stock up on ammo. Pick up 6.Tag.
Now you need to decide which way to choose. If you want to follow this guide, pick right. At the end of the corridor send some ammo towards Troika post. Now you can use the gun to finish off remaining enemies. Go through the door.
You'll find yourself in a big hall and under Troika fire. Quickly, get to that room on the right. Now, get to the other side of the room and hide behind the container. Turn right, wreck the door, kill one more enemy and from the window shoot at the crew manning the Troika gun. Go down, take control over the gun and destroy the rest of incoming enemy's reinforcements. After a bit of talking kill one more wandering sheep behind the door and get through.
After a short scene, go outside. Turn left, go past the rift and get the 7.Tag. Now go towards the fountain. There's another Troika post here - to capture it, go right, as close as possible to both the barricade and the entrance. A huge shotgun-lover appears. Shoot him down as fast as you can. In the corridor kill everything that moves. The post is yours.
Another scene and another Locust attack. You can fight them off using your Troika gun or by reverting to the usual methods. A door will open but don't go inside yet. Take your position in front of it and kill two enemies inside. Now you can go through and shoot down the creature lurking near the right side of the hall. Another door will open after a short conversation
Get upstairs and inside the big hall. You'll get a chance to observe some fighting from your vantage point. Wait till one of your companions opens the door. Get inside and downstairs and finish off remaining Locusts. Follow your teammates. After another door opens, turn right in the corridor and get the 8.Tag. There's a shotgun on the other side of that corridor. Take it. You'll be attacked by ceiling-walking Wretches - just shoot them down with your shotgun. Go forward.
Take Hammer of Dawn off the floor. Don't go outside yet. Look through the window and aim the Hammer you picked up at the Seeder (the big one). This way, you'll kill it taking no risk at all. After the drawbridge falls, finish off everything moving in your vicinity and make your way towards the place the Seeder was lurking in. Cross the river and go through the door one .of your people opened for you. Follow your team till you meet another Seeder. Destroy it the same way you killed the first one - using the Hammer. Just take care not to get minced by those Wretches running about. Turn left and go downstairs. Kill two Wretches on your way and another few in the chapel. In the room you found Rojas' corpse in, get 9.Tag (right side, in the small niche) .
After some fighting in the corridor, you'll meet yet another Seeder. Some Hammer treatment is highly recommended here. Get back to the room you came in from - it'll get attacked by Locusts. Kill two Drones and follow your men. You shouldn't see much of a resistance. Turn right near the Troika post. Take over the gun and finish off remaining Locusts. Run after your teammates and eventually you'll reach a balcony. Destroy those spores laying about, shooting at enemies below in your spare time.
Now get ready to fight Berserker, which shouldn't be much of a challenge, provided you dodge fast enough and don't let him touch you. What you need to do is to lure him outside and destroy it with your Hammer. First things first, however. Start with backtracking towards burning debris and take 10.Tag (beside the corpse). Not far from here is the room Berserker lurks in. When it comes out, just step aside to the left, go forward and into another corridor. Stand near the door and wait for the Berserker to see you. When it charges blindly towards you dodge and, when it steps aside, go through the door. In the next room repeat the experience. Before Berserker destroys the last door, take 11.Tag from the alcove near the gate. Go outside and turn left. Behind one of the lanterns you can find 12.Tag . Finish that pesky Berserker off, using the Hammer.
If you haven't gotten rid of the Hammer yet, do so when you have the chance. Take the left corridor when you get to the fork. Follow your companion until you reach a checkpoint. After a short scene with a rat you'll meet two Boomers. Some caution is advised here. One good hit and you're a goner. Take cover and aim for the head. In the room with the statue you'll run into one more enemy - killing him should be a piece of cake.
After getting out of the building aim your fire at the shooter on the balcony. As soon as you kill him, a pathway opens and two more monsters come running out. Kill them as well and shoot down the crew manning the Troika gun inside. Kick the door. When you get to the room with a staircase, go downstairs. You'll see a door and a dead end. Destroy the sofa and get 13.Tag.
Now you can go through the door.
Locusts organized a little welcoming party just for you. Take care while fighting Boomer. Turn right and shoot that sniper and kill a few more enemies. Get through the big room as a part of the scaffolding falls down. There are two Wretches near the exit and a few more are waiting outside. Kill them with your shotgun. After you get downstairs turn around and look under the staircase. There should be 14.Tag lying on the floor.
Appearance of the Corpser heralds trouble. Take your position immediately and shoot everything you've got at the Boomer. Getting rid of remaining enemies shouldn't take long. Further ahead you'll encounter another barricade. This time your biggest concern should be the Troika gun. Run to the right side of the field and hide behind the car nearest to the gun. Shoot down the crew or throw a grenade. Run forward, kill Wretches and Drones on your way and put a grenade in the hole. Go straight ahead - when you see a man sitting over the gate don't come closer but look around those metal boxes and get 15.Tag. Now you can approach the man.
There's not much to do here at first. At the end of the street you'll find an entrance to a building. Get through and out on the street again. A short fight awaits you here. There's a sniper in the gatehouse - reward him for his patience with a well aimed grenade. Get down onto the platform and use the valve. Now you can cross to the other side. You'll get attacked by Drones - hide behind the metal cover and kill one after another till you land on the bank.
Here comes the night. The Kryll will kill you if you make even one step in any cast shadow. From now on you need to stay in the light. You'll find ammo and some grenades in buildings nearby. Get in the building near the burning trashcan. When you come out, hide behind the car and shoot those Drones.
Look around. See those white propane tanks (like the one on the screen shot)? Now it's your only light source. Go towards the closed hole. On your left side, inside a metal construction there's another tank. Light it and get 16.Tag. Next one is on your right - hide behind the car wreck. Under a chair and some sheet metal there's another propane tank. Just watch out for the Troika gun - best hide behind the wardrobe. Round the corner, there's another light source. Shoot it and run towards another car wreck. Look around and find another tank on the other side of the street. Approach it and take down enemies near the Troika gun.
Kick the door nearby and kill the Wretch. There are some guests you need to take care of outside. Don't wait behind the barricade - go forward, flanking your enemies from the left. Only a few Wretches will try to get in your way. You know what to do with them. Finish off those Drones now. Blow the propane tank near the armchair and enter the building. After getting out, hide behind the car and move it as far as you can ("X"). Go forward and kill enemies manning the Troika gun. At the end of the hallway you'll find a crumbling wall, shoot at the propane tank behind the trashcan.
Get into the alley and inside the building. After a short conversation, smash the door and kill two Drones at the end of the street. There's a bigger fight waiting for you at the park. Don't run to the other side - the Kryll will get you there. Just kill your enemies one after another till they're all gone. Walk to the right side of the park (do it quickly, staying in the shadow for too long will get you killed) and shoot the propane tank behind the chest of drawers on the left. You can find another tank behind the debris on the right. You won't be seen till you get to the right side of the street. What you need to do is to run into the building and direct the ray of light towards Dom, so he can get to the other side of the street. After that set up the reflector so it lights the debris on the left side. There's 17.Tag lying there, pick it up. When more enemies appear, get inside the building, look out of the window and shoot the propane tank. Get outside through the window and throw a grenade from behind the wall a close the hole. Under some sheet metal you'll find another tank. Approach the stall.
You're inside a building, but it isn't in the best of shapes so stay in the light. When Wretches attack you , bring out your shotgun. After you get out of the building, turn right and pick up 18.Tag. On the backseat of a nearby car you can see a propane tank - shoot it, get close and keep your pace with the sliding car wreck. You'll find some ammo in the back of the gas station. What you need to do is to tank your APC (using the handle). Locusts prepared an ambush here, so stay on your toes. When a Boomer appears, get into the building and finish him off from there. Also, watch out for the Wretches. One more tip: do not shoot the gas tanks - hiding behind them isn't such a good idea either. It's a gas station after all and it isn't hard to blow it all up.
You need to get through the town with your APC. Take down Kryll using the UV rays. Pay attention to what your pilot says and where the Kryll come from.
This fight seems hard only at a first glance. Try to use the Troika turret (on the far right) for the most part. You'll find a sniper gun in the building, but don't shoot hiding enemy snipers - you'll need it later. At the end of the fight a crater appears and three Boomers with it. You can finish them off with well aimed sniper shots to the head...or you can blow them up shooting the propane tanks below.
Go towards the buildings. Soon you should meet with some resistance from Wretches of a new kind. What makes them different from regular Wretches is the fact they had contact with Imulsion and explode after death. After killing the first wave, stock up on ammo and head further. Finish off two more enemies and find a brick building with a skull painted on a wall. Go inside - at the end of the wooden pier you'll find 19.Tag.
There's an elevator in that building but it's useless without electricity. You can find the generator in the third building. Turn it on, get back to the elevator and go up. Enter the manufacturing plant through the window.
You need to get through the door. Go down any hallway - the button you press won't do anything. Go back and pick the other hallway. In the room with corpses open the door. A man will lead you to the lion's den. Unfortunately, in a room with unstable floor your guide will meet his fate. Go slowly if you don't want to repeat his mistake. If the floor starts shaking, go back and pick a different way. In the right corner of the room you can find 20.Tag.
You'll get attacked by a group of Wretches. Don't try to aim, shoot from the hip and stay mobile. A few rooms away you'll find a handle - use it. Replenish your ammo and go downstairs. Your old friends decided to show up - welcome them with appropriate cordiality. Use another handle to open the grating. Drones and Wretches appear, kill them using the usual methods. Find another door, but before your droid opens it, you'll need to fight a a Boomer and a Grenadier. After that, get through the door, go downstairs and look for 21.Tag. Press the button on the console nearby. Hop into the cart.
Driving the cart doesn't exactly require special skills. Look out for the Wretches, but for the most part, you don't even need to lean out. After you get out of the cart head forward. Open the door and try to do the same with the next door you'll find. Don't get discouraged when it stays closed and press the button again. You'll ambush two Wretches - kill them without much thought.
In the long hallway, you'll fight Black Wretches. Shoot them with everything you've got. Soon, you'll enter the core room and two Boomers will hop onto the platforms and ride to meet you. Shoot them after taking cover behind the barriers. Get onto the platform.
Go forward and right and you'll find 22.Tag. Stock up on ammo and go down. You'll fight two groups of Wretches, finish them off shooting from the hip. Well, agility isn't exactly attributed to marines in full armor. However, thanks to an invisible banana peel, you'll slide right down. Kill the incoming Drones and get 23.Tag from under the staircase. You'll find some ammo in the room. While making your way down, you'll meet a sniper, aim immediately - you can finish him off before he takes his position. You'll see a Boomer on the other side of the room - take cover behind one of the stone pillars and kill it with a bullet to the head. To go further (or down to be exact) you'll need to kill all enemies. When you get to the fork pick the right way, although there's not much of a difference here - you'll need to fight some Wretches and a sniper hiding in the back anyway. You'll reach a narrow hallway - grenades and some bullets will remedy the problem of its inhabitants. When the Corpser appears, look for 24.Tag on the outcropping on the right.
Corpser
Definitely the best looking monster of Gears of War...but unbelievably weak. You can finish him off in 20 seconds. Here's the easiest method to do that. Ready a loaded shotgun - any other weapon will do, but shotgun doesn't need to be reloaded as often. Approach the Corpser. When it raises its legs, shoot the belly until the monster recoils back and opens its mouth, another weak spot you can shoot. Rinse and repeat till The Corpser backs off onto a platform. Now all you need to do is to destroy both of the platform supports and the Corpser is no longer a problem.
Now it's time to get the rest of the Locusts. Go straight ahead and eventually you'll reach some buildings. You'll run into Theron Guards, a new type of enemies. If you have a sniper gun - shoot the enemies from a distance, if not - just finish them off skirting around the buildings. After you're done, press the button...
You'll get ambushed by a group of Drones and Theron Guards, and just as you kill them, two Boomers will come out of a newly opened door. Shoot at them taking cover in the building. After you finish them off don't approach the door you saw Boomers come out from. You can do that after you pick up 25.Tag lying near the place you started the level at.
Inside you'll run into a Theron Guard, don't think -shoot. Make your way forward, find a sniper gun and use it to help your friends below. If there's nothing left for you, get a Hammer (you'll need to finish off some Wretches first). It's best to swap it for a sniper gun though; losing the machine gun can cost you your life here. Run ahead and use the handle.
There's a sniper in the place you can see on the screenshot. Finish him off crouching below the window. You can use your sniper gun to shoot enemies in the courtyard. After you're done go downstairs. Two Drones will come out of the opposite building - kill them taking cover under a window. You'll also have to deal with two Wretches. Use a sniper gun and take down the crew manning the Troika gun. After that, shoot the propane tank in the car.
Start with taking 26.Tag lying in the street on your right. When you get to the locked door, wait for Jack to open it. You'll get attacked by Drones and Wretches. Move back to the street you came from and finish all enemies off shooting from the hip. After you get rid of all enemies, two Boomers will get out of a hole in the wall. If you have a sniper gun - shoot their heads off, if not - take cover and shot everything you've got at them. Boomers will charge forward all the time so it's best to take your position in the alley you came in from.
There's a conservatory behind the door. You're safe...till you run into a Berserker. Be sure to grab a Hammer on your way- you'll need it to finish the Berserker off. You'll meet your enemy in a big greenhouse. You can't destroy him in the place you're in, so run towards the hallway the Berserker came from. You'll find yourself in another big greenhouse. What you need to do is to provoke the Berserker into doing as much damage to his surroundings as possible. The bigger part of the ceiling gets crushed, the more place you have to use the Hammer. The fastest method to kill this enemy is to use the weapon after destroying the first pillar, a split-second after he goes into the next greenhouse. When it's over, use the handle at the end of the room to extinguish the fire.
If you still have that Hammer, making your way forward should be a piece of cake. If you don't - well, you'll need to do your best with what you have at hand. Hammer can be really helpful when it comes to closing enemy-spawning holes. Should a need for more firepower arise, you can use the Troika gun. Next courtyard - you'll fight mostly Drones here. Watch out for those who jump down from the crumbling wall and attack from the back. After you get rid of the Drones a Boomer will appear. Take cover, and finish him off. You'll run into another Boomer near the barricade - he's got some support but a few grenades will make them history.
A few routine fights waiting for you here. Firstly, take cover and kill those Drones and Theron Guards (you can find some ammo in the alley). Get rid of the Hammer, if you haven't already. Go left to reach the cemetery. You'll run into some more Drones, you know what to do. Go through the tunnel.
On the other side hide behind the statue. It should provide for adequate fire cover. Then try to go as far as you can crouching behind the barrier. Finish off those Drones behind the barricade. When you're done a gate wil open.
Stairs are never a good place to attack. You need to crane your head up and your enemy can see you pretty much everywhere. A Theron Guard will attack first. Kill it and take care not to let him get too close. When the Boomer appears, shoot and fall back as long as it takes. It's a good idea to shoot with short bursts here. Pick up the ammo and get into the garden.
The entrance isn't guarded. Just after you come in, prepare a grenade - go right and use it to close the hole. Go upstairs. After taking a few steps you'll get attacked by Drones. Don't get too close to them or you risk getting sliced by their chainsaw. Kill them hidind in the opposite room. After the fight and a short conversation through the radio, get downstairs and take your position to the right of the house entrance. A Drone will come in. Get rid of him before he gets the chance to cause trouble. Going along the newly opened hallway you'll reach another hole. Throwing a grenade in is risky so it's better to hide behind the wall and kill the Drones one after another.
When you get to the desk slice it with your chainsaw. Get 27.Tag. Go down to the basement. You won't meet with any resistance at first. Just go forward till you reach a flooded room with wine racks. Now you need to find a way to open a secret pathway. Approach the wall opposite the stairs and look closer at the cabinet first from the left. One kick and the secret is out. Unfortunately, you'll need your droid's help to get through the next door. Of course, Locusts aren't the ones to sit and wait. Take your position opposite the grating, just behind the wall. When they attack, throw a grenade and shoot down the rest.
Enemies surrounded the house! You need to force your way through the siege and to the exit. Start with leaving the basement. In the room with the desk (or what's left of it) you'll get attacked by Wretches. Fall back to the hallway and kill one after another. Don't forget to reload often. After you're done a Drone will run into the room, opening a pathway in the process. Go through the hallway and upstairs. Shoot at the attacking Drones as long as you can. When they burst into the room, take your position and pick them off one after another while they're still on the stairs. At the end of the fight a Boomer will come in. Take cover wherever you can and attack his head. Go downstairs, clear the rest of the rooms and stock up on ammo. A new way is open to you. It leads to the attic. Go there and shoot some Drones from the windows. While you're at it take care of the barricade blocking the door. Go downstairs and kick the nearby door. Be careful, there's an enemy hiding behind the statue. Outside, two Boomers prepared a warm welcome for you. When you kill them, you'll activate a 30 sec timer. You need to get to the APC before time runs out. Just dash towards the vehicle as fast as you can. Fighting here is suicide.
Your mission is to hold the place you're in till the train arrives. Start with taking down the two snipers on the bridge. Pick up their weapons if they drop them. Then take your position on the left side, in front of the entrance, prepare a grenade and throw it into the hole when it appears. Repeat it when another one opens and look for cover ASAP. Shoot at the train crew and get onto the platform.
Welcome onboard. You can only go forward here. Making your way won't be as easy as it sounds though. Take down Theron Guards and Drones. When you reach another door, press the button. Hmm, who do we have here... a stowaway! You can see a button near the red fuel tank. Lure the Berserker onto a next car, sneak past it and press the button, which should detach the car from the train. Get inside the car.
Near the entrance you can find 28.Tag. You'll see the Reavers outside. For now you can't really hurt them - just watch out for their attacks. You'll run into a Drone and a Theron Guard. Pick up the Torque Bow left behind by the Guard - you'll need it in the final boss fight. Another car and another Drone. You can also find 29.Tag lying here. Climb up the ladder. The method to defeat the Reavers is actually quite simple - just swap guns often, depending on the side they're coming from. Move up the train. You'll run into some Wretches. They have survival instincts of a lemming - just take a good position and watch as they fall down the ceiling and right into the line of your fire. When a timer appears on the screen, run forward to the next car. Drop fuel tanks off the train, when you notice a red skull, turn left and enter a small hallway, there should be 30.Tag behind the door. To stand a chance in the final boss fight you should have a Torque Bow and a Lancer.
This fight can be really hard, frustrating and ubelievably long. It can also be short and take around 2 mins, but you need to meet some requirements:
What you need:
- a fully loaded Torque Bow (12 arrows);
- a fully loaded Lancer
- grenades, just in case;
- some patience
Raam plays along the following rules: when the Kryll surround him he's invincible; he sends them out from time to time but don't count on lasting that long. What is more, Raam shoots at you and a short burst from a close range will almost certainly kill you. To top it off, you can only move in the light, every step taken in the shadow means getting owned by the Kryll.
Strategy: Prepare your bow and crouch behind a barricade. When you get the chance, stick your head out and shoot an arrow at Raam. A well-aimed shot should drive the Kryll away - immediately get your Lancer out and shoot at Raam's head. After reloading swap weapons again - Kryll should be back by now. Repeat the procedure until Raam starts to get dangerously close. He rarely heads straight for your cover, usually he stands in place for a bit - you can use that to your advantage and throw some grenades at him or just shoot from the hip. When he starts going around your barricade however, immediately get to the other side of the field. Best do it in dives. Rinse and repeat. Good luck!
Update: Watch the cutscene before the battle VERY CAREFULLY.
When RAAM jumps down from the platform, you'll see a RAIL GUN installed. Now all you have to do is, as the battle begins and DOM moves forward to distract RAAM, find your way to the platform, their is a slope behind that leads to the rail gun. It will take only (MAX in my case) 30 seconds depending on your dodging and running ability. Now take the RAIL GUN and whether the KRYLL are covering RAAM or not, shoot his HEAD.
He'll die in three seconds!
