If the Nintendo 64 was the third Nintendo game console why is it called the 64

The Nintendo 64 was named for its 64 bit CPU. In comparison the SNES was 16 bit and the NES was 8 bit.

It is not the 3rd Nintendo game console, NES, SNES, Virtualboy, and Gameboy came out before it.
