What does Xbox stand for

It (quite probably) stands for direct X Box, seeing as Microsoft was developing Direct X at the time.

It doesn't stand for anything, it's just the name of the system. There was an "X" on the original xbox and it was a box, hence the name.


Many believe the X stands for Xenon, which was the XBox 360's alias when it was under development (named after the processor built by IBM that was used in the 360). However the Xenon was not welcomed in to the console's hardware specifications until the XBox 360 and was not used in the original XBox console, voiding the theory.
