How do you complete chapter 5 on the golden compass

if u are stuck on the part where you have to get something from the monkey you have to hit the monkey with the rock in doing this he will be stunned immediatly when he hits the ground change to the cat and swipe him apparently this works however i have been trying for ages and i cant seem to do it. have fun =]
