I can personally recommend several other games. Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, Cube 2: Sauerbraten, Nexuiz, Alien Arena, AssaultCube, OpenArena, Urban Terror, Tremulous, and World of Padman. Those are all FPS games, though if you like arcade-style games, you might like NeverBall and NeverPutt, though my patience with them runs thin. If you like Guitar Hero, you might like Frets on Fire. If you're into racing, you could try TORCS. Some people love MMORPGs, some do not, but Runescape seems popular among those who do.
Of course, there are also mods available for commercial games, namely older ones. Half-Life 2 (I found it for $4 with several other VALVe games) sells for $20, but you can find it even cheaper sometimes. There are an infinite amount of mods for it available, so you'll have hours of fun gameplay. Another game, Unreal Tournament 2004, was made the same year as Half-Life 2, and got extremely got ratings. It also has tons of mods available, namely: Killing Floor, Red Orchestra, Alien Swarm, NeoTokyo, and tons more, in just about any genre you can name.
