What is an online game
There's a wide range of online games:

1. Console game
2. First-person shooter game (FPS)
3. Real-time strategy game (RTS)
4. Cross-platform online game
5. Browser games
6. MUDs
7. Massively multiplayer online games (MMOG)

As you can see there's 7 basic genres of online games but people are dividing them on even more, depending what device you are using, what platform you are using, and what program you are using to play them. But, the most common genre is Browser games.

So when you actually mention the online games everybody means that they are those games which you can play online, by that it means that player should not download and/or install any software on the computer in order to play online games. Online games are often called as "Browser games" because player only need browser with the necessary plugins to play online games. Plugins are: Adobe Flash player, Adobe Shockwave Player and Unity Web player. They have to be regularly updated and allowed to run in Browser settings in order everything to works fine. Online games can be F2P or need to register. By free to play (F2P) it means that player doesn't have to leave any kind of information (email, password, credit card info...) in order to register and to play the game. Need to register is totally opposite of F2P kind of games. Browser or online games can be played on PC, Mobile or Tablets, but lately player can find a big source of online games in form of application on mobile and tablets. Who knows, maybe they are a new genre of online games that we have to put among 7 genres above because in expansion of smartphones usage a lot of people are playing games from app stores.

As you can see, online games have a lot of shapes and no borders to be played, you just to have a good Internet connection..
