I am not sure about the Japanese but for Mandarin there is a common misconception that CRISIS = DANGER + OPPORTUNITY, which is totally wrong.
Crisis (Wei Ji) is made up of two characters Wei, which means Danger and Ji which means the initial moment of something. This word (Ji) in combination with other more favorable words can eventually give the meaning of opportunity but certainly not in combination with Danger, in whih case it conveys the sense of adversity.

I hope this helps you to get started.
