What is a sand box video game

Pretty much any game where the player can manipulate a significant portion of the simulated world in the game. A good example of sandbox games are Grand Theft Auto, Little Big Planet, and Garry's Mod.
Sandbox games usually have the player in a highly destructive/ creative environment where there is no real goal other than to do whatever you want.
