Should I buy Assassins creed II or should I buy Brotherhood
Since you know the story, yet know naught of the games themselves, I suggest you recap the story and buy the lot. AC and ACII are going pretty cheap nowadays as games usually do once their sequels take off. I bought both and am about to buy the third, but I began with ACII and noted references to things I didn't fully understand. I stopped playing ACII and went for the full story.

I am so glad I did too, since all the games so far (including what I have seen of the third in a demo gameplay video) seem to link and continue almost exactly where each had left off. This is clearly noticeable when AC and ACII both end a little abruptly with Desmond Miles uttering something to the tune of "What the F**K?" at the end after a shocking discovery. ACII picked up right where AC left off, down to the room, where Desmond was standing and the situation so far. After finishing ACII, I noticed that the escapades of Ezio Auditore were not entirely completed. Now he has an army of Templars after him.

It would make sense to own all of games and their sequels if the method of continuity was as it is in the AC series. Plus, the games make so much more sense if you actually did the memory access yourself rather that hearing other people talk about it. I love the series and I feel they will have years of replay value... and I can say that I own the set. Maybe Ubisoft will allow a release of a collector's edition like the Diablo Collector's Box or Medal of Honor: War Chest.
