How does shadow the hedgehog use chaos control

In the games and Sonic X, when Shadow uses Chaos Control, he is taking power from a Chaos Emerald to warp time and space.

The Chaos Emeralds turn thoughts into unlimited power and, in the right hands, can be used to control factors that are normally uncontrolled, like time and space (Chaos Control can stop or slow down time). Of course, this is all just make believe, the seven Emeralds are a creation of Sega and Sonic Team.

The Archie comics versions are different: the Emeralds are merely links to a great source of power called the Chaos Force. The Archie version of Shadow has a direct link to this and can use Chaos Control without Emeralds.
