Strange you should ask this. Back in Sept of last Toms Hardware (a computer industry website) compiled a list of hardware to build a gaming system. One that, in the end cost exactly $647.00.

The components they used were decent, including an AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition for the CPU, and 2 x Sapphire 100245HDMI Radeon HD 4850 for the video card. For more info on the project check it out here:
