According to the Bible, Jesus (the Creator God of the Old Testament - John 1:3 & 10), breathed air into Adam's lungs, and Adam (man) BECAME a living soul (Hebrew: nephesh; a breathing creature).

It doesn't say that He PUT a soul in man.

The Bible says we HAVE a "spirit" in us... but, that, we ARE "souls"... living mortal creatures that need to breathe to live, with no preeminence above the beast.

"...the spirit THAT DWELLETH IN US lusteth to envy..." (James 4:5).

"...the Lord, which... formeth the spirit of man within him..." (Zech.12:1).

"...the LIFE (nephesh; SOUL) OF ALL FLESH; the BLOOD of it is for the LIFE (nepheshl; SOUL) thereof... for the LIFE (nephesh; SOUL) of ALL FLESH is THE BLOOD thereof..." (Lev.17:14).

Man is a breathing living "soul" or "creature." And until Christ made him alive... he was a dead one.

"...that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all it vanity. All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again." (Eccle.3:19-20)

Any first year med student or scientist will tell you what God has already revealed to us about His creation: The creature, man, needs to "breathe" to live. And he needs to maintain a specific range of "blood pressure" to live. His "mortal life" (his mortal soul)totally depends on these two basic physical functions - breathing and blood pressure.

If breathing stops or blood pressure is lost... he's a dead soul.
