How do you get elephants in medieval 2 total war

Elephants are technically only availlable to the Timurids, who invade in late game. But there are also some mercenary elephants available to be bought in the Middle East. If you are a less honest gamer, the cheat "rogan" will give your selected general or city an elephant unit.
