When do Aztecs appear in medieval 2 total war

The Aztecs and the eastern most part of Mexico appears when the highest possible port upgrade is made and one of your ships sail into the blackness to the far West. Eventually, you will find land over multiple turns. The Aztecs themselves control two extremely well-fortified cities, and there are a few Rebel cities which are good places to port and prepare to deal with the Aztec threat.
