How do you voice chat in games

Well, in COD MW2 there are voice chats and even on steam for the computer. You need a microphone\headphones together and in the computers you usually press z for it to work. This voice chat doesn't work on many games though like star wars republic commando my favorite game but you can press t or y to chat with typing!
