Does john marston survive at the end of red dead redemption

No at the end, the US army attack the ranch, and the uncle gets killed. Then, later in the mission, John opens the door of the barn to find several soldiers and some lawmen. You then enter dead eye, take some people out and then you open fire and kill him IT SUCKS!!!
