Why do metal gears have blood

In MGS2, during the battle against three Rays, when you hit them with the stinger missiles, they are not spewing out blood, but oil which dries and the seals up the holes in its armor. In MGS4, the legs of the Gekkos are made of artificial muscles, so they are spewing out artificial blood, too.
