Go to poupetugames.com there is a site to make Mario levels not game but levels witch you can post on the site where people can load them up and play them whenever  
On yoyogames.com (where you download gamemaker) search in games Mario maker or something like that. you should get something up for a Mario bros. 3 game maker engine. it's very simple to use.  
SCREW GAME MAKER just get Mario builder final ver 4 if you get it you can make Mario games EASY
 
Lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of practice with game maker, spanned out over several (4-7) years.  
Instead of trying to use Game Maker to make a Super Mario-like game I suggest you look into the SuperTux project instead. It is an open-source game, and you are free to use the engine if you want.


I say adobe/macromedia flash would be the best.
