Why did sonic turn into a werehog

in sonic unleashed at the beginning eggman uses a machine and he uses the power of the chaos emeralds to power his machine and then sonic gets caught inside eggmans machine and eggman sucks power from the chaos emeralds and powers the machine. then the emeralds turn black and then that's when sonic is werehog. i hoped this helped :D
