What do Battlefield 3 skins do

In Battlefield 3, the player can customise their solider with different appearances or 'skins / camouflage'. These are unlocked through multiplayer progression and are used to help the player blend into the environment.

For example, a player might choose the 'Desert Khaki' appearance to help him blend into dry, desert-like environment found in maps such as Kharg Island.
