How do you swim to another island on gta 4

Niko can swim across to other islands, as long as they are unlocked. If he tries to swim to locked islands, he will be shot to pieces by the police!

Once Niko is in the water, instructions on how to swim should appear on screen (according to whichever console you have of course). He cannot swim underwater.
