During the modern gaming era would a video game company still be successful if they made a game that uses sprite graphics instead of 3d

There are many successful games in sprite version but since now is the age of 3D graphics, even Pokemon, a sprite type game has converted to 3d(not completely). But people are still big fans of pokemon. So the answer is a mixed type. It may be successful but not hugely successful.
