Can world of warcraft dragon whelp pets attack

No, Dragon Whelps are only companions. They follow you around, they don't attack. Although in the upcoming Mists of Pandaria, they will probably be used in the pet battle system. It seems this system will allow players to pit their non-combat pets against another players pets. Sorta like Pokemon.
