What is a good item for medium leveled ranger in place of a shield

A zamorak God Book is the best offhand item for archers as far as range attack bonus goes but there are a few shields i persoanlly prefer that dont take away from range attack.

Faithful shield crom castlewars is a decent choice about the same as rune no - range attack and a prayed bonus.

Spirit shields are also a great choice, the plain one is the same as rune with no negatice effects but a quest is needed for it ( spirit of summer )

and theres a new choice avalible if you have 65 defence. Stealing creation has aquired 3 new reward shields in the last update one to protect from each attack style Melee ( roughly 60 all def ),mage ( same basic as rune with +25 mage def ) and range( also rougly same as rune with +70 range def )

all the shields i named niether take away or add to range and magic attack bonuses so they will work equally well in both areas.
