Why did Isaac look at Ellie at the end of dead space 2

The final scene with Isaac looking over at Ellie, and the manner in which he did it, is an homage to the ending of the first Dead Space game.

I won't give away endings here so you'll have to check out the end of Dead Space yourself. ;-)
