How do you find the chaos emeralds in sonic advance 3

after you find the all the chao for that zone you can find a special key in any course from that zone, once you finish the course with the key, go find the locked spring in the levl elct for that zone and jump on it. if you fail, you need to find another key. you can have multiple keys, keys from one zone cannot be carried to the next. simple right?
