Can beta game versions ask testers for money

I've never been a beta-tester so I'm not completely sure, but I don't think they can unless the game goes out onto the market and the tester wishes to continue playing the game.

I play an MMORPG and a few of my gaming buddies were beta-testers. I don't think they were asked to pay for anything until the game was officially released to the public.
