When does sonic become king sonic

In Sonic and the Black Knight, after you defeat the Dark Queen.-----------------------------slightly wrong not after you defeat the dark queen it is how you battle her there is also a transformation cutscene of sonic to king sonic but after the battle is over you can be king sonic unless you play the boss battle again.
