How do you get level select in sonic 2

Go to options (past 2-player mode), and go to sound test. Play tracks 19, 65, 09, 17 In that order, you should hear a ring sound effect. Then, hold C on the genesis controller and press start. When the title screen appears, hold A and press start.

on the game gear version just press start, button 1 button 2 and SW on the d pad at the same time until you hear 2 ring noises then press start.
