Is sonic over
Sonic as a series has been going downhill since he entered 3D. He had never had a true game on the Saturn and Sonic Adventure featured very little of him, more of other characters who were very slow, like Amy or Big. Sonic Adventure 2 redeemed him- though the gameplay was still varied but slightly more speed-driven. It was very much a success. Sonic heroes was supposed to be the return of pure speed to the games- no treasure hunting or fishing or going around in a robot. It was plagued by various problems, such as an abundance of bottomless pits (in fact, most levels were simply small areas of land suspended over an abyss of death) and an over-sensitive character select feature. Not many fans liked the idea of having a team either; it was once again too deviating from the speed. Shadow the hedgehog fared even worse- the control was clunky, no one understood the plot and the weapons and vehicles didn't help. Sonic the Hedgehog (often abbreviated to Sonic '06) was even worse than that- only Sonic was remotely fast and once again, it was too far from the concept of speed- one character drove a vehicle that once again, no one liked, and another was a dropped idea from another game who was very slow. The Sonic Riders series wasn'treceived very well but it did do better in the sequel. Sonic and the Secret Rings also suffered from bad gameplay, but it did focus more on speed. After being in Super Smash Bros Brawl and Sonic and Mario at the Olympic games, the hedgehog's run of spinoffs was over- Sonic unleashed was released. It focused more on speed, but it once again fell short of the total focus because of a hastily added werewolf form that could just of easily been dropped. It fared better, accompanied by two successful 2D games in the Sonic Rush series. The Sonic Rivals series also went moderately well, but Sonic chronicles had a more mixed reception. Overall, Sonic is making a slow but steady comeback- once Sonic Team drops the gimmicks and concentrates on the speed, the hedgehog may become great again.
