How do you blend in with people on assassins creed brotherhood

In both ACII and AC Brotherhood you blend by walking into the middle of a group of civilians. If you keep up with them and match closely their pace then a design of white dots and lines covers the ground. Stay inside that area to remain blended. This doesn't work if you've just killed a guard or have been in any way detected, the people will just run away.
