How do you unlock silver in Sonic the Hedgehog

you have to beat him when he attacks you if you don't know what to do here it is
1. get all the rings before anything else
2. run around away from silver if you go close to him he will pick you up and throw you away losing rings
3. wait until he picks up objects then quickly home-attack him
4. repeat all steps
