How do you get arrested in godfather part 1 the game

Just finished playing, wondering that myself. Apprently you have to either be beat up by the cops with thier hands or a night stick rather than getting killed by gunfire. You appear right out of the police station. I stole the cop car, a cop saw, he shot a round into the door, i stepped out next to him, and he arrested me.
