Pokemon HeartGold SoulSilver Celebi Event Walkthrough
Head into Ilex Forest. Bring a Pokemon that knows Cut so you can quickly reach the Shrine that is just beyond the first small tree that you can cut down.
Walk up to the Shrine and be sure the Celebi is at the head of your party. Interact with the Shrine, Celebi will do a quickly hop then Lyra/Ethan will appear. They will tell you a rumor about this shrine, that many who tamper with it disappear. After that, Celebi will take you some where, and Lyra/Ethan will be forced to tag along! Most of the rest works along a script, letting you see events that you missed. It gives much of the story for your Rival and tells you a fair bit about what happened to Team Rocket.
When the light fades, you are somewhere … and you will hear Ethan/Lyra mention that the radio just announced a date from 3 years ago! You are now in the past! They will notice that someone else is here as well, a pair of people. This is your rival and someone else. We learn that this is Giovanni, the former head of Team Rocket! He gives your rival some advice, that one must acknowledge their defeat to move on.
Celebi will pull you through time again. This time, you will give Giovanni alone inside a cave with a radio. You are now back in the present, just as the Radio Broadcast is being sent out from Goldenrod City. It's time for you to face Giovanni.

It's only after you defeat Giovanni that you are returned to your own time. While it was a short break in the story it certainly proves to be a good filler.
