This is the Madden NFL that the hardcore football fans thought only existed in their dreams. I have enjoyed my 2 weeks with Madden NFL 12 more than any other football game I have played “Bar-None”. Madden NFL 12 is “TRUE TO THE GAME”.

The game has some issues, but a lot of those are minor annoyances and not major. From a pure joy of the gameplay, this may be one of the most balanced and best yet. Even with all the changes in the creative team at EA Sports, the franchise doesn’t seem to have suffered for it and for that we give Madden NFL 12 9 out of 10.

Overall, fans of Madden should be quite pleased with this year’s edition of the game. The new enhancements to gameplay and attention to detail in game modes are definitely welcome. Most of all the presentation of the game is second to none and really engrosses you into the game. I love football and Madden 12 definitely quenches my thirst for the game while we are in preseason. But I’ll play it throughout the coming year both in my offline and online franchises. To some, annual releases of the game are useless but I really think that this year’s release of Madden has stepped up the franchise and taken it in the right direction. For those wishing to spend the few extra bucks you may want to consider the Hall of Fame edition which includes all kinds of sport collectible goodies. You’ll even have the chance at scoring a one of a kind autographed gold card. What are you waiting for NFL fans? Madden 12 is definitely worth the purchase this year. There is enough subtle changes as well as a few glaring obvious changes to say that this title definitely improved over last year's.

What it all comes down to is the fact that Madden NFL 12 is the best football game on the market. Sure, there’s the odd glitch and perhaps an issue here and there, but the game is exceptional in what it offers and delivers. I’ve never played a more complete or immersive game of pigskin. Everything an NFL fan would want in a virtual representation of their favourite sport is here, and then some. If you purchase this game, it may be hard to put it down, but that’s okay. You’ll certainly get your money out of it. Just try to remember the actual, real-life season. Don’t become too immersed and forget about your favourite team’s opening game. Hut!

Small visual shortcomings and some audio annoyances might keep Madden 12 from being 100% on top form, but with the crazy amount of content and nearly endless gameplay possibilities, these seem like minor grievances. So get your bowl of chips, settle into your favorite chair, and make sure your eyeglass prescription is up to date. It's going to be a long football season, and living it along with Madden 12 seems like a perfect way to experience what's sure to be a blockbuster year for the sport.

While the game as a whole might not feel like a brand new experience, the little updates here and there, polished visual presentation and the addition of Online Communities, Madden NFL 12 is another winning formula for the ultra popular franchise.

One last thing I was disappointed with is a missing feature. In NCAA this year you have the option of playing as a coordinator in Dynasty, which means if you hate playing defense, like me, you don’t have to. No such option exists in Franchise here. Sad.

The improvements to Madden NFL 12 are small, but they’re spread over every facet of the game. Madden fans are getting a tighter, more finely tuned game. AI is smarter and more accurate, the lighting and animations are more realistic, and the Franchise is more expansive. It’s disappointing that there are still areas where other sports titles are outshining Madden, and with no new gameplay modes it’s hard to recommend it to players who were bored last year. However, in terms of pure gameplay, Madden NFL 12 looks better, hits harder, and runs faster than ever before.

Madden 12 is one of the better games in this franchise, but it's not worth purchasing if you already own last year's edition. Many of the flaws that have plagued the series for years are still present--such as the effectiveness of scrambling QBs--and many of the new features are hardly noticeable. Just consider for a moment how slowly the Madden franchise is at adopting changes in the real game. In the 2007 NFL season, green stickers were placed on the helmets of quarterbacks to designate that they could communicate (via radio) with the sidelines. It took four iterations of the digital experience for this incredibly small change to be implemented. Progress comes at a snail's pace, making versions blend together so that they're barely distinguishable from one another. In real life, every player eventually hits a performance wall; players can only improve for so long before they start to regress. Madden 12 is the video game equivalent of a player at the end of his career. It can still dazzle you from time to time, but it's clearly showing its age.

As for me, I'm taking the long view. After years of claiming that they have to get the "gameplay right" before moving on to other issues, it seems that Tiburon has, for the most part, done just that. So, the foundation seems to be in place, but as with the Detroit Lions, Madden 12 is probably still a year away (sorry, Lions fans). But take heart: it'll be a good year nonetheless.

It’s definitely not back to the drawing board for Madden, but clearly taking things like player stats to the fans shows just how lost the developers are for drastic improvement ideas. Yes the paint job and a few engine parts are new, but it’s the same reliable car — after awhile things are going to feel especially familiar.
