Top 5 Fan Remakes You’ll Want To Check Out

Video games can toss us into spectacular worlds filled with adventure, exploration, and absolutely stunning narratives. However, over time these worlds become dated which often means looking over our once classic and cherished video games for something new and fresh. If it wasn’t for a vast and dedicated fan base, fan remakes wouldn’t exist but luckily these five fan remakes will prove that a polished and overhauled video game could provide countless hours of entertainment once again.

For now, there seems to be a clear indication that these development studios and rightful owners of these IP’s won’t be taking down the projects that fans spent years in the making.

GoldenEye Source

I don’t know about you but on the Nintendo 64, 007 GoldenEye was the pinnacle of first person shooters growing up. I spent countless hours with friends as each player roamed across the different corridors, picking up weapons and gunning one another down. We’ve seen GoldenEye get remade before, but with GoldenEye Source, fans of the original multiplayer game modes can once again play through it thanks to this modification of Half-Life 2 right on the PC.

Black Mesa

We’re still waiting for Valve to finally wrap up the trilogy of Half-Life but if you happen to be an unfortunate soul that has yet to pick up the original title which started the series then do yourself a favor and try out Black Mesa. Black Mesa is a third-party remake of the original Half-Life that was made possible by just a team of forty people, all volunteering their time to bring an updated look of a beloved video game classic.

Developed over a span of eight years, Black Mesa finally released in September 2012, to massive attention from fans, publications and even Valve.  Now you can relive or take on the journey of Gordon Freeman for the first time ever.

Mari0

Mari0 is a very interesting remake of the NES classic Super Mario Bros. While much of the gameplay looks and plays out similar to the original release, this developer decided to tack on the portal gun from the video game Portal. Not only can players go through the game as they did with the original release but can change how the progress through the level, collect coins and also defeat enemies.

Added into Mari0 is a set of new levels themed around Portal’s Aperture Science but also a level editor to allow players to create levels of their very own.

Project AM2R

Another Metroid 2 Remake or otherwise known as Project AM2R is a fan development to bring an incredible overhaul of Metroid 2. Players can once again join Samus in her mission within the depths of planet SR388 but this time in a brand new style. The team behind the project promises improved graphics, new areas, a map system, better enemy AI, along with other implementations from newer Metroid games.

Currently, it appears that the team has also taken consideration of bringing Project AM2R into the mobile platform.

Skywind

There have been all kinds of mods released from the gaming community for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. This is a franchise that was highly received and regarded for its epic tales and gorgeous environments. But before there was Skyrim and for that matter Oblivion, the video game series saw its first release to the console platform with Morrowind. Now looking back at the game years later, it looks completely dated. Thankfully a team has stepped up to the plate in order to develop TES Renewal Project which happens to be a fan remake of Morrowind but through the Skyrim Creation Engine.

I personally can wait to wander around this odd world again just as I did years ago on the original Xbox and from the looks of things, this development team is pouring a lot of heart and soul into the project to deliver players that initial experience once again with the game.
