The Witcher 3 New Screenshots

CD Projekt Red is teasing us with three new and beautiful screenshots of their upcoming game, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, due to release on PS4, PC and Xbox One at an unspecified date this year.

The screenshots involved don’t give much away on the surface, though in an open-world game that ostensibly contains so much freedom of choice, anything in the screenshots could be a potential clue to in-game elements, plotlines, or features. Study them closely!

The first screenshot shows Geralt riding his horse through a bloody scene, corpses laying about left right and centre, while in the background looms a city, distant yet ominously close for such wanton violence to be taking place. Has Geralt just killed these men, or is it the doing of some unknown force, or monster?

The second screenshot shows Geralt walking through city streets, though whether it is the same city as in the first screenshot is anybody’s guess. Along the path, two thugs are seen beating a man, while Geralt reaches for his sword. This picture brings back memories of old RPGs like KotOR, where you could rescue a beleaguered citizen from a gang of thugs, but then choose to help them out or extort them yourself. One hopes that The Witcher 3 will be full of these open-ended moral decisions that make for rich gameplay that demands multiple playthroughs.

In the third screenshot, Geralt is back on his horse, navigating a murky swamp land. Across the marsh, silhouettes of riders can be seen travelling away from a fire off to the left. Is Geralt tracking the riders, or heading off to investigate the fire?

Even looking at the screenshots exudes the sense of possibility and choice that this game claims will be a focal point. To leave you with some food for thought on the scope of possibility in The Witcher 3, CD Projekt Red’s Marcin Iwinski claims that “We don't tell you what matters and what doesn't, as your actions in the game speak far louder than words. I mean, there are 36 different endings in Wild Hunt.”
