Weekend Play Game Review: Hyper Square from Team Signal

Team Signal LLC, has recently delivered to the Google Play Store, a game that requires good hand eye coordination and incalculable dexterity when it comes to your fingers. Hyper Square is the latest twitch-quick type game to play on your Android device. If you like music, and levels that require memory, as well as speed in game play, then Hyper Square is a game that you should download. Just how fast can you hit that download button?

I ask that question because ultimately, this is a game about finger speed, memory and rapid problem solving. The learning curve in the game is not steep, but remembering what to do and when to do it, based on the squares in the game, could take a little time. This game will have you scaling, flinging, flicking, swiping and coordinating all the movements required, to extend the level as long as you can.

Weekend Play Game Reviews gives DroidGamers an opportunity to highlight some games that may have been overlooked in a busy week of game releases. Some of the games may have been released a couple of weeks ago, or longer, but they still merit reviewing, so you can have an opportunity to catch up on some good gaming during your weekend.

"Hyper Square has only one simple objective, put all the squares displayed on screen into their targets as fast as possible to reset the countdown timer. Survive long enough to advance and top your friend's high score!" - Team Signal Games

Though this game is fun to play, it is a bit difficult to explain. It is one of those games that you just have to play to get a better understanding of what to do. Primarily, random squares will appear on your screen. On the backdrop of the screen is a singular red line that starts at the top of your screen. Each time you successfully fling/drag/flick or scale a square properly, the red line resets. If you don't successfully complete the task by the time the red line reaches the bottom of the screen, it is game over. It seems pretty simple right? The game is challenging because different squares have different attributes, or what you are able to do with them.

The first level is called In The Beginning. You are instructed to drag or fling the solid colored square into the square that has an outline of the same color. The outlined square sort of radiates, to let you know that it is your target. The game starts off at a pretty good pace. Each game level is in phases. After you get past phase four in a level, you go into hyper mode, which ramps up the speed and complexity quite a bit. After you pass phase eight, you enter infinity mode, which is basically an endless mode. Reaching infinity mode on each of the levels will earn you a star on that level. Getting past the hyper mode on each level unlocks the next level for you to play. In all, there are eight levels to conquer, and trust me, by the time you get to level five, Midnight Dreams, you definitely will be challenged by the game play.

It is recommended that you play the game with headphones. This is a good idea because it helps you get into the zone. Flicking the squares and scaling them produces notes/sounds that add to the melody. The music in the game was created by Triodust. If you like the sounds of the tracks, which is composed of some pretty good electronic music, you can find Triodust on Soundcloud.

This is a game that is easy to recommend for a download because it is fun. Actually, I think it would make a very good XBox Kinect game. However, since it is a mobile game, I would recommend playing it on your phone. The reason I say that is because there is less area to cover. I primarily used my thumbs to play, but this is definitely not a one finger game. There is simply too much going on in the game. By the time you reach the Midnight Dreams level, they actually add a red square with an 'X' in it that you have to maneuver your squares around, or flick out of the way. The complexity at this point is mesmerizing.

Hyper Square is a free to play game, and it is free to play done right. There is only one in-app purchase, and that is to unlock the game to get unlimited lives. It costs $1.99 to do so. Each time you start the game you will be given five hearts. As with most free to play games, your lives regenerate over time. What Team Signal has incorporated, which is a pretty good idea, is a spin wheel of sorts. You drag your square into the outline square and the wheel rotates/scrolls with different chances to win 1-5 hearts by either watching a video, or if you are lucky enough, you can gain hearts for free, which means you don't have to watch a video at all. This really gives gamers an incentive to keep playing, without spending a dime, which is nice.

Overall, I definitely recommend that you try out Hyper Square. It is a well put together game that is fun and full of dexterity tests. If you enjoyed playing Cytus or DeeMo by Rayark games, then Hyper Square is the next game you should try out. It is integrated with Google Game Play Services with twenty achievements and leaderboards. If you want a neat game to play at a party, Hyper Square is hard to beat. It will have you competitively reaching for the highest score you can, while enjoying the music of Triodust.
