Just bought Formula Cartoon All-Stars and not quite sure where to begin? We have some handy tips on what to expect and how to get started in your bid to be some kind of amazing cartoon-based racing star.

The Basics

  • Controls are pretty simple if a little limited. You have a virtual wheel to dictate where you go, plus a choice of two places to put it - either on the left or right side of the screen, depending on if you’re left or right handed. It might b worth experimenting here.
  • You’ve got the choice of two modes - Adventure or Tournament. It doesn’t really matter what you start with but I found Adventure a little gentler early on. The first few races, in particular, are easy enough that you can take the time to master the controls, as well as gain some easy coins.
  • Tournament is mostly there for you to compete with others. There’s always a new tournament to participate in and you can win a trophy for doing so. Of course, there are rewards involved too!
  • Adventure is the game’s form of story mode - unlocking new sections as you progress. In both cases, upgrades unlock across the modes, so you don’t have to worry about levelling anything up separately.

Upgrades and Changes

  • Almost everything upgrades wise is looks based rather than skills based. You can use your coins to buy new wheels, a new base, and a exhaust too. Save those coins for particularly cool looking things, like the Adventure Time base, as things can get expensive fast! And you don’t really want to spend money on aesthetics, do you?
  • While coins are used for personalizing, gems are way more useful. They’re used to buy one off nitro boosts during races, but more practically, they’re used for vehicle upgrades. You can steadily upgrade the top speed, acceleration, and turbo, although it does get pretty expensive after a time.
  • On that note, make sure you collect all the gems possible. They’re relatively rare on the track but worth going out of your way for.
  • You can use coins to buy new characters too, although unfortunately they don’t come with their own special abilities. They look cool though.

Power-ups

  • You always get one nitro boost in a race for free. Save it for when you need the edge in a race. It could make all the difference.
  • Power-ups are gained by running over crates in the game. You don’t get to keep it for long though, as running over another one changes things up. It ties into the fast nature of each race, as none of them take long to complete.
  • Some power-ups are missiles, homing in on your enemies. Others are more tactical, such as being able to place tomatoes on the track and obscuring your opponent’s view.
  • Don’t forget to activate shields and magnets as often as possible. The former protects you from attack, while the latter means that you attract coins, which can then be used for new stuff.
