Upon opening Samurai Siege: Alliance Wars, you will be led through a simple tutorial covering the basics. You will learn about constructing buildings, training troops in the dojo, basic battle mechanics. Your main screen will be your village where you can train troops, harvest resources, and build your defenses. The screen layout and controls for Samurai Siege: Alliance Wars are simple; all you have to do is point and tap! For example: if you want to build a guard tower, open the build menu. Within the menu, tap the “Defense” category to bring up a list of several defensive buildings. Tap the archer tower to place the building plans on the map anywhere you choose, then confirm the construction of the building by tapping the “build” button next to the building plan.

Your first goal in Samurai Siege: Alliance Wars is to create a strong economy and defendable base where you will carry out most of your operations. Without this base, you wouldn’t have enough resources to fight in battles, or even generate troops! Your 3 main resources are coins, essence, and gems. Coins are responsible for upgrading and constructing most buildings and essence wells, while essence is mostly used for training military units and constructing markets; markets produce coins, essence wells produce essence (duh). Gems speed up troop production, upgrades, and construction, but you only have a limited amount available to your before you have to purchase more gems via IAP (In-App Purchase). Once you have a solid foundation of coins and essence to work with, you can begin to construct defensive structures to protect your base; enemies from all over the world can raid you, and falling prey to these raiders will result in a loss of resources if you can’t fend them off. You can build walls, archer towers, cannons, and other strong defenses to keep the bad guys out and your resources safe while you’re away.

Your second goal in Samurai Siege: Alliance Wars is to complete the story mission and maybe raid a few enemy bases along the way. Before you even enter the battle menu, there are a few things you need to do in your main camp. The first step to waging war is training your troops in the dojo; the dojo is your main “barracks” building, and having more than one of these will help you to pump out troops at a faster rate. The dojo can be upgraded to accommodate a larger queue of soldiers waiting to be trained. Every soldier that completes training will be moved to the “practice yard”, which is where your units are stored until battle. The capacity of your practice yards, and the number of practice yards you have built, determine the maximum number of troops you can bring into battle; for example, if you have two practice yards that can hold 30 soldiers each, you could potentially bring up to 60 troops into battle, but only if you train them beforehand. As you may have guessed, having more troops than you might need is far better than not having enough troops, so upgrading your training yards is a must.

When you’ve prepared your army, press the “battle” button in the lower right corner of your main screen; this will bring you to a map, and from here, you can choose to take on a story mission, or you could choose to attack another player in “multiplayer mode”. Attacking another player costs 200 coins, but don’t worry; if you successfully pull off a raid, you could earn around 20,000, depending on the resources available in the base you are attacking. If the first base you receive is too strong to succumb to your forces, you can choose to skip this base and find another one for an extra 200 coins. Once again, this small fee is worth the trouble, provided you have a sizeable army.

When you enter a battle, you can control the deployment of your forces with simple tap gestures. If you have more than one type of soldier with you, such as samurai and ninjas, you can tap either unit icon in the bottom left corner to select with troop to deploy, then tap an area on the battleground to deploy a single unit, or hold your finger down to deploy units at a very fast rate. You can only deploy troops in areas that aren’t occupied by enemy structures, however, which means that the ground marked with red boxes are off limits. Once you deploy your troops, you no longer have direct control over them. Each unit will have a different personality, so to speak, which means you should be able to plan out your actions based on the predictions of how your units will behave.

As an example, samurai attack everything in their path, but it seems to me that they veer toward active defense structures (archer towers, cannons) rather than passive defense structures and other buildings, but only when they’re an equal distance away from an active defense structure and any other structure. Ninjas, on the other hand, rush past every defense and building they can so they can get to enemy resource-producing or resource storage buildings. Ninjas are greedy, so they will ignore all other structures (with the exception of walls)  until every resource building is wiped off the map, even if they’re being attacked by defensive structures along the way. Now that we know the personalities of these two units, we know that samurai should be used to clear out active defense structures, while ninjas can be used to raid the base and quickly demolish buildings while the archer towers, cannons, and other defenses are occupied. With a little bit of knowledge and planning in Samurai Siege: Alliance Wars, you can become a successful battle-master.

Now that you know the basics of Samurai Siege: Alliance Wars, it’s time to move on to more advanced strategies and techniques for getting the most out of your gaming experience.

Cheats & Tips for Samurai Siege: Alliance Wars

Keep Your Reserves Full– It would be highly beneficial for you to collect resources whenever they’re available. Your essence wells and markets will often produce small amounts of essence and coins for you to collect, and these resources won’t do you any good if they’re just sitting around unused. Tap the icon above the market or essence well to collect the resource and add it to your storage.

Check Your Gift Shrine–  If you have a gift shrine, make sure to collect your daily prize and claim it in the rewards menu. To get to the rewards menu, tap the “history” button in the bottom left corner of the screen (only visible when new items appear), and tap the “rewards” tab. You will see rewards you’ve earned so far in Samurai Siege: Alliance Wars, and all you have to do to claim these rewards is tap “claim” beside each one. If you don’t claim the rewards within a certain amount of time, you may end up losing the rewards before you even get a chance to use them.

Spend Money to Make Money– Upgrading your markets and essence wells can be very expensive, and building more of them can take up lots of resources as well. While this may be discouraging to new players, it is important to realize that money sitting in the bank does absolutely nothing for the expansion of your empire. Think of building/upgrading resource production structures as an investment; you sink a lot of money into your investment now, but later on you’ll receive more money than you put into it. This also applies to training large armies, in a certain sense. There is quick cash to be made in raiding bases, but this only true if you manage to successfully overrun the base without losing all of your units. The goal is to create a large, flexible, and varied army that can easily conquer a medium sized base (60 units should be about right if you use some strategy when attacking), then deploy the whole army to capture one decent-sized base. The army will cost a lot of essence, but you will loot enough essence and coins from the base to more than make up for the original expenditure.

Make Them Take an Arrow to the Knee– When building defenses for your base, it would be very wise to take into account the abilities of the inexpensive, yet powerful archer towers. Because of their extraordinary attack range, you can use these defensive units in conjunction with walls to slow down the enemy and pelt them with arrows while they try to break down the barriers. For example, a good setup would be to place an archer tower in the middle of your base, then add walls around the archer tower. If you upgrade the archer tower, it can dispatch a small squad of ninjas or samurai trying to break through the walls before they even make a dent in your defenses. It is also wise to place a few other towers scattered in the midst of your buildings so that there’s a greater chance that your enemy will take fire for prolonged periods of time before they reach your archer towers or castle.

Samurai Siege: Alliance Wars Review

Samurai Siege: Alliance Wars definitely has a certain charm to it, and I can’t really deny the fact that Samurai Siege: Alliance Wars is a very challenging, fantasy-inspired strategy simulator. I often feel reluctant to try certain games because of their “childish” appearances, but I’m glad I tried Samurai Siege: Alliance Wars, despite the admittedly cool, cartoon-like artwork. I should know by now to not judge a book by its cover, and this definitely applies to Samurai Siege: Alliance Wars. When I opened the app, I expected a lame, simple city-building game, but I was almost immediately impressed with the combat features and sheer variety of structures I could build in my main base. I basically expected a novelty, and I got a well-polished, full-feature, challenging strategy game wrapped up in a pleasing format that will entrance any gamer. Little brothers and sisters will beg to have a chance to play some Samurai Siege: Alliance Wars on their older siblings’ mobile devices, and older generations will be telling their children and grandchildren about this “hip” new game they found on the “world wide web” (bless them). Everything about Samurai Siege: Alliance Wars is guaranteed to please, and I’m really glad that I downloaded Samurai Siege: Alliance Wars to take it for a spin.

If I could change whatever I wanted about Samurai Siege: Alliance Wars, I would only change two things; I’d reduce the waiting time on upgrades or construction, and I’d remove gems from the game. IAP in games like these are annoying at best, but downright frustrating at their worst. Luckily, Samurai Siege: Alliance Wars doesn’t require the use of gems, but gems certainly make the game more fun to play. Other than this minor complaint, I’m perfectly happy with Samurai Siege: Alliance Wars.

Ratings

Artwork– I don’t think Samurai Siege: Alliance Wars could have graphics and artwork that are any better. Perhaps a closer zoom on the screen would be nice, but it doesn’t take away from the game at all. The sprites are well animated, and the scenery inspires the moods that they’re trying to achieve.

Artwork receives a rating of 10/10.

Music/SFX– Possibly one of my favorite features of Samurai Siege: Alliance Wars, the soundtrack manages to perfectly capture the feeling of serene tranquility back at the base camp, which becomes a moving, elegiac piece of art when you enter the battle menu. The only issue with the Music and SFX is the noticeable cutoff when the music loops on the battle screen. Usually you won’t stay on any single screen long enough to experience the abrupt cutoff, but it’s definitely there.

Music/SFX receives a rating of 9/10.

Story/Originality– While Samurai Siege: Alliance Wars isn’t primarily a story-driven game, it does have a story mode that introduces new units and features into the game that would be otherwise impossible to access without completing certain levels of the story. Samurai Siege: Alliance Wars has its own features that make it stand out from other games within the city building/strategy genre, such as special units and battle mechanics; this gives an overall feel of a unique gaming experience.

Story/Originality receives a rating of 9/10.

General Gameplay– In regards to most of the aspects of Samurai Siege: Alliance Wars, I wouldn’t change a single thing, but as far as the currency system and waiting time goes, I’m not as pleased. I dislike the fact that the gems are only available in small amounts through prizes, or in large amounts via IAP, but I do appreciate the fact that you receive a large amount of gems to start out with for free. I also dislike the long waits for buildings to finish upgrading, but I have gems to help with this.

General Gameplay receives a rating of 8/10.

Addictiveness– Samurai Siege: Alliance Wars can be incredibly immersive, and you will find yourself losing track of time while you’re playing, but Samurai Siege: Alliance Wars isn’t as addictive as it could be. If the construction/upgrade waiting periods were shorter, Samurai Siege: Alliance Wars would become more tempting to pick up and play at random times, rather than the “sit down for devoted gaming time” schedule I find myself following.

Addictiveness receives a rating of 8/10.

I believe Samurai Siege: Alliance Wars deserves an overall  rating of 9/10.
