Warhammer 40.000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm Game Guide & Walkthrough

Warhammer 40 - Warhammer 40.000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm - Game Guide and Walkthrough

Warhammer 40.000 Dawn of War SoulStorm is the next part of the popular RTS - based on Games Workshop's popular tabletop wargame - Warhammer 40.000. SoulStorm will give us access to all of the races available in the earlier parts, and will also add two more - the Sisters of Battle and the Dark Eldars. This strategy guide includes descriptions of every army and campaign "key" missions, and also plenty of advices for online battles.

The game is a typical RTS. In every mission, we are starting with the typical basic level, and from there we will have to construct new buildings as well as units. It is important to know that there are visible differences between races when it comes to structures/units and their abilities, but everything is based on the same system. You must also know that every army has different tactics of fighting; some have strong but slow units, while other army's units are faster but less strong.

This is worth to know:

On every map, there is a limit of formations. With the default engine it usually looks like this:

- 3-5 builders

- 4-8 infantry squads

- 4-7 vehicle units

There are certain mods that are using custom settings for this.

- The Necrons are the best and most easy race for beginners.

- Defense and attack bonuses depends on an unit's morale level.

- To unlock super weapons and special units, you must have a control point and a relic.

- To get information about a specific upgrade/unit and its ability, just move the cursor over the icon to see a full description.

- Infantry units that are in water will have weaker defense and will do less damage against enemy units.

- Infantry units that are in craters will receive a defense bonus.

- In the campaign, the enemy will receive more units and their units will have more hit points than usual if the difficulty is set higher than Standard.

- To construct buildings, train units and research upgrades, you need resources (as in most RTS games). To gain energy, build generators; to gain requestion points, capture control points -and build listening posts on them to gain even more.

- You need to have the regular Warhammer 40.000 Dawn of War as well as its expansions - Winter Assault and Dark Crusade- installed in order to have all of the races available in online battles.

- Select units/buildings and press Ctrl+1-9 to assign them to a group. Then you will be able to select them quickly by simply pressing that number on your keyboard.

- Click left mouse button on the upgrade/recruit icon in order to turn on the automatic mode. It works perfectly for purchasing new squad members.

Sisters of Battle

The Sisters of Battle is a religious order with a Gothic architecture. Their skills are based on faith. Act of faith is the best ability in this army. This army is one of a few separated from the Empire, and their warriors are usually fanatics.

Like in all earlier parts of Warhammer 40000, the campaign on the difficulty level "standard", is easy. This time, the authors of the game created a whole galaxy, not just a single planet, where the action takes place. The player will be able to invade new planets, even moons. After every turn, player will receive more and more funds to reinforce his main army and provinces. The player will be able to buy units/buildings in every of his provinces - this feature is automatically available at the start, if a specific province will be invaded by an enemy. Every province has got its own bonus, which will be available for the player conquering. In the campaign galaxy, all races have got their place, with their capital cities. After having conquered the capital province of a specific race, you will eliminate them from the campaign. Battles for the capital provinces of chosen races, remind battles with a specific scenario. Every goal of such a scenario is on the battle map, with full description in objective tab (OBJ). A full list of goals for every scenario is available in this guide, but unfortunately, they don't tell the player which is the best solution how to reach those goals, every playable race is reaching their goals in their individual/different way.

That's how you will begin, every mission/scenario depends only on the race that you are playing and on your personal general army. You must find the best tactic to win - on your own.

Campaigning consist of annihilation/ destroy HQ/ take and hold / and scenario missions. You will meet with a take and hold mission on every province with this icon >>>

This how you will complete the campaign, depending only on your situation on the battlefield - Kaurava system campaign info - Single player/Campaign - Warhammer 40.000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm - Game Guide and Walkthrough

This how you will complete the campaign, depending only on your situation on the battlefield. Here is the universal tactic for most missions:

1. Create a stable and fast resource gathering method (usually by building a few generators) and take control over a few control points.

2. Stay on defense (to get enough upgrades) and recruit a strong army.

3. Begin expansion on the whole map. If it is possible, use a super weapon.

This procedure works only in single player system. It is easier to write description about it than to do it in real action. Everything depends on the player's speed of reaction, aggressive movements are based on risk.

This screenshot shows the galaxy of the campaign, with description for every important/scenario province.

Necron capital, there is no scenario in this battle, typical annihilation.

- Destroy four monoliths

You can also destroy summoning core, it will make necron forces less mobile (they will have no possibility to jump around the battlefield from one structure to another), destroy power generators in the middle.

It's a mission with a time limit. Every few minutes Monoliths will be upgraded. When they reach the third upgrade, they will move from their original positions and attack your base. When all four of them attack your base at once (with all the remaining Necron forces) they are almost unstoppable.

To prevent the Monoliths from upgrading you should capture and hold four strategic points to cut the energy transmitted from generators to the Monoliths.

So you should be quick about capturing at least two of these points (and destroying the Monoliths connected to them if possible to avoid recapturing by Necron forces).

Online/Multiplayer - is a part of Gamespy system, where all your victories / defeats will be saved to Your GameSpyID account. As a beginner, the player should not fight against experienced players, since it will only ruin his statistics. After joining any server or hosting, a game player should check stats of every guest inside the server room. All information is available at the "info" icon, right next to player's nickname.

Players

We can recognize some types of players. It depends from battle scale (how many players will play).

New Players (Newbies) - easy to recognize: weak statistics or sometimes even no stats at all, totally new in the game. Usually open to join any battle, and they do not care about victory rules. Experienced players look at them like on "fresh meat", just another easy target that will allow them add one more victory to theirs stats list. Newbies usually are ignored or kicked automatically from battles bigger than 1vs1 (obviously, no one wants to play with a newbie in one team). New players usually are very careful in battles, holding the entire army in the base, upgrading slowly, building defenses (turrets). Instead, new players should be aggressive, fast and always give their enemy a reason to think about.

Moreover: if a newbie thinks that he is able to defeat experienced players, or only looks like a newbie, after joining the server, he should to type instantly that he only uses a new account. Sometimes this helps.

Weak players (noobs) - players without skills jumping from server to server as they usually saying "for fun". Usually they got on their account some number of battles, sometimes even a lot, but their win ratio is less than 40%. Good players often use noobs to fix statistics or just to gain another easy victory. Noobs will never be able to enjoy a good reputation, and they can forget about a chance to join any clan.

In addition: Peoples are naming weak players as "noobs". No experienced player has respect for players of this kind, even if they don't say that openly. It is better to create new account, than being recognizable as noob.

Experienced Loners - sometimes professional (Pro) players that prefer to play alone or with chosen friends usually for fun and stats. They can be good team players in bigger battles, but they join randomly chosen servers. You can recognize them by their very good stats and no tag before nickname.

Clan members - always some kind of tag before nickname. They are usually playing in teams with other clan mates. In most cases, they kick automatically every noob and newbie.

How play, to win?

Every good player - is aggressive. Aggressive brave movements on maps, fast taking control points and fast building brings victory. Almost from beginning to end, throughout the entire battle, you must keep your enemy busy on defense of his control points and main base. This is important - you cannot keep losing units in actions like this, but you must learn, in when attack and when retreat is needed. In case of battles with teammates, it is important to support your teammate. If you will lose your partner - You will lose battle as well. A few popular tactics:

1. Rush - useful in 1vs1 battles. Goal of rush is to eliminate the enemy's base as fast as possible. It is obvious that the opponent must defend his base, in the meantime, you can keep upgrading your economy on the rest of the map. You must know as well that if an opponent is aggressive and the rush fails - you will probably lose the battle.

2. Tech - players capture 50% of the map and defend their territory. In the mean time, they are upgrading technology etc. on back, in main bases. Usually wins the side which will fist break enemy lines as first.

3. Horde Tactic - players do not upgrade advanced technologies or save resources on super weapons and advanced buildings. Instead, they start recruiting the most useful and basic - usually also cheap - unit/formations, and after that, they will make a powerful massive attack on a chosen enemy player. It is a risky tactic, but if teamwork is good, usually successful.

Those are most popular tactics used online. Make sure before the battle :

- What are the victory rules.

- Is it quick start (QS), or standard

Being aggressive and fast - is the key to victory in every battle.

Action/reaction - this is procedure of best movements when enemy:

1. Is attacking you on open battlefield - do not let him make you to run away. You must counterattack. You cannot allow the enemy to control more than 50% of the control points/map area.

2. Is attacking your main base, typical player will start defending - what is good also, but you can try those:

a. Send worker to drop HQ in other part of map, you do not need to build it, just drop the project.

b. Attack with everything you have got the enemy's main base. It will be harder, if the enemy has turrets. A move like that will make the opponent leave your main base or he will lose his own. This method fully depends on the race you play with. Beware of necrons.

3. Is attacking your teammate - you must support his defense at all costs. In battles 2vs2 and bigger, when you will lose teammate you will lose round also.

4. Is capturing control points - you cannot allow him to do that. During the entire battle, you must keep limits on the enemies''s possibilities, and in order to do that, you have to control at least half of control points for your own. Only necrons can ignore this rule.

5. Is defending and upgrading his base (he is on defense) - from logic view, he already lost.

6. Is attacking your control points - defend them with everything you have got :L

7. Is building many turrets everywhere - it may slow you down at the beginning, but his defeat is only a matter of time.

8. Is fighting against your teammate, far away from his main base - attack his man base : )

9. Is moving his super weapon on your base - do not defend, attack his main base and try to relocate yours, of course ignore this rule if there is a possibility for successful defense of your main base.

10. He dropped barracks and turrets right outside your main base - You must destroy them, you cannot allow enemy to block you inside your own base. It is a very dangerous situation and requires your immediate attention.

In online battles, the special abilities of heroes can change the fate of a battle. Unfortunately, battles where heroes take part require your attention and reflex in acting.

Badges/ banners and useful links.

Custom badges and banners are simply .tga picture files. Badges must be 64x64 pixels in size; saved out in uncompressed 32bit .tga format. That's RGB colour (i.e. millions of colours), not colour-mapped, and the 32bit means it has RGB colour channels (Red-Green-Blue i.e. your actual colours) and an alpha channel. If you save it out in 24bit, it'll only have the RGB channels and no alpha. Badge images are simply saved into the games Badges folder in order for Dawn of War to see them when it starts. Banners are exactly the same as badges, except they're bigger at 64x96 pixels. They're kept in the Banners folder. Easy.
