How do you fight Devil doom on Shadow the Hedgehog

you have to hit his eye but after you hit it it switches head so then you have to follow it abut and hit it when you get the chance ..but make sure you gather loads of rings before you start to head to hit it.. other wise you turn normal again and fall to your death
